The Cheltenham Gold Cup remains one of the most popular races in the festival and it’s clear to see why, with some of the best horses in the UK and Ireland battling it out for one of the most prestigious titles in horse racing.

Minella Indo won the 2021 Cheltenham Gold Cup with Rachael Blackmore in the saddle and is likely to run in the 2022 Gold Cup. The likes of A Plus Tard and two-time winner of this race Al Boum Photo will be in contention for the win this year once again. Below, we’ll take you through the odds from some of the most popular bookmakers ahead of the 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Cheltenham Betting Tips

1. Jonbon

Jonbon has made a strong start to life on the track with three wins from three hurdle races so far. He eased to victory at Ascot not so long ago and will surely be a tempting bet for punters heading into the 2022 Cheltenham Festival, especially when in such an impressive run of form recently.

2. Sir Gerhard

Sir Gerhard has shown their class in recent years, although it remains unclear as to what race this horse will run in during the 2022 Festival. He’s the favourite in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle but is also available to bet on for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. If he runs in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle, then expect to see a routine win for Sir Gerhard in this one, as he should have too much quality for the rest of the field.

3. Al Boum Photo

Our betting tip for the Cheltenham Gold Cup is Al Boum Photo, as we tip the 2019 and 2020 winner to claim back his title. Having finished third in the 2021 Cheltenham Gold Cup, he’ll be eager to return to winning ways. He’s looked impressive this season and is more than capable of challenging the likes of Minella Indo, A Plus Tard, and Galvin in this year’s race. At a price of 10/1 with bet365, it’s too good of a price to turn down given Al Boum Photo’s quality.

Head over to our Cheltenham betting tips page, where we have a more in-depth look at the tips heading into the Cheltenham Festival.

  • Paddy Power
  • Coral
  • William Hill
  • Betfred

Promotions for Existing Customers

We’ve already mentioned some of the great sign-up offers that are available to new customers, but you might be wondering what is around for experienced punters. We’re going to take you through some of the promotions available for existing customers in the lead-up to Cheltenham.

Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG)

Bookies offer Best Odds Guaranteed which enhances the odds on races in the Cheltenham Festival. This promise generally applies to horse racing and greyhounds in the UK and Ireland so is valid during the Cheltenham Festival. Punters who take an early price or board price, and the Starting Price (SP) is different will have bets settled at the best Cheltenham odds.

So, if the board price is 6/1 and the SP is 10/1, bets are settled at 10/1. Below, we’ll give you an example of the difference Best Odds Guaranteed can make.

  • £10 win at 6/1 returns £70.
  • £10 win at 10/1 returns £110.

Best Odds Guaranteed is popular with many bookmakers and provides a good incentive for potential new customers to register, make a deposit, and place bets at the latest festival odds. Existing customers can also benefit regularly from this generous promotion on horse racing in the UK and Ireland.

BOG is typically introduced on the evening before racing and from 09.00 am on the day of the race. There are no wagering requirements and Cheltenham betting odds restrictions. However, there can be limits on what can be won as a result of the guarantee. The promise applies to win and each-way bets on all meetings, including the Cheltenham Festival.

Ante-post betting is primarily for punters looking to bet months ahead of the Cheltenham Festival taking place. Ante-post betting is essentially wagering funds on your selections before the race card has been confirmed. With this, there is always an element of risk, as your chosen selection might not even race in the event you’ve backed it in.

With ante-post betting, if your selected horse doesn’t run in the race when it comes to the Cheltenham Festival, your bet will be settled as a loser and you won’t receive any of your wagered funds back into your account.

However, the main positive of ante-post betting is that the odds are significantly better on each horse compared to what it could be by the time each race comes around on the week of the Cheltenham Festival.

Non-Runner, No Bet (NRNB)

This promotion is typically aimed at punters who wager funds on ante-post betting markets. Essentially, NRNB means you can wager funds on horses in advance under similar rules to betting on the day.

Usually, when you bet in advance and your horse doesn’t run in the specific race you’ve bet on it to run in, you have lost your bet. With non-runner, no bet however, you can take slightly shorter odds but give yourself some insurance if the horse doesn’t run in that particular race.

If you’re backing one of our better value Cheltenham betting tips in advance, make sure you look for NRNB. This way, if the horse is aimed at a different race or doesn’t make the Festival due to injury, you will receive your stake money back and the bet is void, as opposed to losing a bet before the races even take place in this year’s event.

Free Bets

Free bets are another popular promotion that some bookmakers offer their existing customers. However, for this to happen with some bookies, you have to have wagered a certain amount of funds before being awarded any free bets.

It’s also wise to remember that not all bookmakers offer free bets during the Cheltenham Festival but when they do, it’s important that you read through the various terms and conditions attached to each offer.

Types of Bets

There are many different types of bets that you’ll have to know about if you’re relatively new to horse racing betting. We’re going to do all the hard work for you though and will take you through the different types.  If you’d like to read more, head over to our Learn How to Bet page which includes in-depth explanations of each betting type.

Single bets

This is the simplest bet. If you back a single horse to win and it does, then you’ll win money. But if it doesn’t, you lose your stake.

- 2022

Each-way bets

This is often a fan favourite. An each-way bet is two bets, one half your stake on the selection to win and the other half on the horse to place. For example, for the first three finishing positions. If your pick wins and comes first and second, you’ll be paid out twice – once for the win part of the bet and again for the place. If your horse finishes second or third, you’ll only be paid the place part.

Doubles are like a single, but with two selections. If the first horse in your bet is a winner, but the second one doesn’t win, you’ll lose your bet. If both of your selections win, then your bet will be a winner.

Similar to doubles and singles, for a treble to win, all three of your chosen selections must be correct. Trebles usually have a sizeable payout depending on the odds involved, which makes it a popular bet for punters.

accumulator bet

An accumulator is a bet involving four or more selections. For the bet to be paid out as a winner, all of the selections you pick must win. The more selections that you include in an accumulator bet, the higher the potential payout.

There are three selections in a Trixie but it has four bets which are a treble and three combinations of doubles.

Trixie Explained

A patent is the same as a Trixie, but with singles added to make seven bets in total.

A Yankee bet is a four selection wager with 11 bets of 6 doubles, 4 trebles and a 4-fold.
