Middlesbrough are searching for a new manager after they allowed Rob Edwards to speak to Wolves and head to the Premier League side. Carlos Corberan was the favourite, but the odds have shifted, with Gary O’Neil and Brendan Rodgers now leading the betting.

Gary O’Neil and Brendan Rodgers are the current joint favourites at 3/1. They have leapfrogged Valencia boss Carlos Corberan, who was the favourite earlier this week. The former West Brom manager is now 5/1.

Other managers in the frame include Steven Gerrard and Gareth Southgate.

Who are the favourites to be the next Middlesbrough manager?

Gary O’Neil is the current joint-favourite at 3/1, and the former Wolves and Bournemouth manager has also been linked with the Southampton job over the last week. O’Neil brings top Championship experience, having led Bournemouth to promotion. He also has top Premier League experience after managing both the Cherries and Wolves in the top-flight. He was sacked at Wolves in 2024 with them in the Premier League relegation zone, but he’s definitely a good option for any Championship side battling for promotion.

Brendan Rodgers is the other joint-favourite. The former Leicester City and Celtic manager was 4/1 yesterday but is now 3/1. Rodgers has won trophies at Leicester City and Celtic, so he would bring top winning experience, but spells at these two clubs, as well as Liverpool, either ended with him being sacked or parting ways. Despite the way these jobs have ended, Rodgers has shown more than enough quality in his time as a manager to show that he could do a good job at Middlesbrough.

Tony Mowbray was the second favourite at 4/1, but it looks like he is falling out of the running as he is now 8/1. Mowbray is of course, well-known at Middlesbrough and across the EFL, having managed at West Brom, Middlesbrough, Coventry, Blackburn, Sunderland, Birmingham and most recently West Brom, where he was sacked in April 2025. Mowbray was manager of Middlesbrough for 153 matches, winning 61 games, drawing 37 and losing 55. He has a good reputation with the fan base and will be welcomed, but whether he can match the qualities of Edwards this season remains to be seen.
