Tote review 2020 : All About Tote’s Main Features
This Tote review looks at one of the most well-known names in the UK horse race betting. Having operated under the name Totesport for the past several years, it has now rebranded back to ‘The Tote’. Therefore, this page rates all of its main features, including the welcome bonus. Plus we look at the innovative Tote Guarantee and Ten to Follow promotions.
|Tote review category||Our rating|

Welcome Bonus – 5
In addition to the welcome bonus, new customers can also join the innovative Tote Ten to Follow promotion. This means you get great value from the moment you sign up. Below we describe these two offers in more detail, but remember, you can take both if you choose.
Up to £10 risk-free bet
Punters can get straight in on the action with a completely risk-free first bet up to £10. All you need to do to claim this offer is deposit a minimum of £1 (that’s right, only one pound), and then place your first bet. However, there is no minimum betting amount required for this qualifying wager. (T&Cs apply, 18+)
If the bet you placed loses, your stake up to the value of £10 is returned to your account as cash. Our Tote review classes this a pure risk-free bet because you get your money back. Some other bookmakers will return your funds in the form of bonus bets. These are not equal, as when you use a bonus bet, your stake is not returned with your winnings – at the Tote it is!
T&Cs: UK customers only. 18+. Place your first bet on Pools and if it loses we’ll refund your stake in cash. Max refund is £10. Qualifying bet is the first bet added to the betslip. Totewin will be the qualifying bet when a Totewin and a Toteplace bet are struck at the same time. E-wallet deposit restrictions apply. Full T&Cs Apply.

Tote Ten to Follow
If you fancy yourself as a fantasy horse trainer, the Tote’s Ten to Follow is the game for you. What you have to do is pick 10 horses that will be in your stable for the season. For the paid game, each stable costs £5.00 (you can enter as many stables as you want). Additionally, there’s a free-to-play Ten to Follow game, but this is limited to one entry per customer. (T&Cs apply, 18+)
Once you’ve built your stable, you’re able to create and join private leagues with your mates. Furthermore, there’s the main UK leaderboard with over £290,000 in the prize fund for the paid game. Punters pick up points each time their horses win or place. In addition, they get extra points based on the SP, and there are also fifteen bonus races throughout the season, too.
The season-long winner for the whole of the UK picks up 70% of the total prize fund, with the winner of the free game bagging a cool £10,000. Additionally, there are four monthly prizes up for grabs from December through to March. You’ve nothing to lose by trying out the free game, which makes this one of the best horse racing promos around.
Betting markets – available sports – 4
The Tote is dedicated to UK horse racing, so this isn’t the site for you if you want to bet on football, tennis or even greyhounds. This Tote review noted two main bet types. You have the option to place single-leg bets which are Totewin, Toteplace, Exacta, Trifecta, and Swinger wagers. Alternatively, and preferred by most punters, are the multi-leg bets, such as:
Tote Scoop 6
Put your knowledge of the day’s racing to the test with the timeless Tote Scoop 6 bet. The concept is simple. The Tote selects six races from various cards, and all you have to do is pick the winners. Entry costs £2.00, which goes into the prize pool, and the winners are paid the dividend based on how many punters joined in. (T&Cs apply, 18+)
While the idea is straightforward, landing all six winners is the hard part. That’s why the main Scoop 6 jackpot often rolls over, so don’t be surprised to see tens of thousands of pounds waiting for the winner – great value for only £2.00.
Even if you don’t manage to get the golden six, there is a place pool as well that you can claim a share of if all your horses placed. Furthermore, pool winners qualify for the Bonus Fund, which follows the week after.
Another popular bet is the Tote Jackpot. This also involves picking six winners; however, the races all come from the same race card. The minimum bet is £1.00, but you can stake more if you want, and the dividend is paid out based on the size of your bet. Like Scoop 6, this prize pot is also known to roll over on a frequent basis.
No Tote review would be complete without mentioning the punter-favourite Tote Placepot, however. This is essentially the ‘easier’ version of the Tote Jackpot. Once more, you have to select six horses from the races chosen by the Tote, but the horses only need to place. (T&Cs apply, 18+) Understandably, the prize pots don’t grow as large as the two mentioned above, but you have more chances of winning the Tote Placepot, which is why this is such a popular Tote bet.
Tote Odds – 5
The revamped Tote promises to give punters excellent betting value all year round. The bookmaker specialises in horse racing, and it shows. For Starting Price (SP) wagers, you’ll be hard pushed to find a betting site that pays out more than these guys.
This is a new promotion, but we have a feeling it’s going to be extremely popular with all UK horse racing bettors. The betting odds on all races have a Tote dividend price and an official Starting Price (as announced by the Starting Price Regulatory Commission). What the Tote Guarantee does is ensures punters get the highest price of the two on Totewin bets (or the win part of Toteplace bets). (T&Cs apply, 18+)
T&Cs: Tote.co.uk customers only. Promotion applies to Totewin bets only and covers all UK races. £500 max stake. 18+. T&Cs apply. Begambleaware.org (Full T&C’s apply).
Streaming and live betting on Tote UK – 0
Currently, Tote doesn’t offer any live streaming or live betting on horse racing. As mentioned above in this Tote review, this is a newly-launched site. Previously, it operated under the Totesport banner which was owned by Betfred. Now, the Tote is run by The UK Tote Group Ltd.
Although no plans have been announced to introduce live streaming, this has become an integral part of the online betting experience for thousands of avid punters. No doubt, as the fresh face of the Tote becomes established, live racing will be something that is added to the platform.
Tote mobile app – 2
Bettors do not need to download a Tote mobile app to place their wagers on the move. The website is mobile responsive, meaning that it automatically adjusts its display to fit the device you are using.
As it only covers UK racing, the mobile platform is easy to navigate. All you do is select the bet type and race you want, then pick the horse you want to back. Each race card offers Racing Post Spotlight information on the runners and riders; furthermore, there’s additional data on the track, weather conditions and what the going is like.
Tote payment options – 2
Things are a little sparse in this department, however. At present, the only payment options are Visa and Mastercard. No e-wallets are available right now. There is speculation that cash deposits and withdrawals will soon be possible at selected Tote racecourse counters, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
Please note, before you can make your first deposit, you need to verify your identity. You can do this by sending a scanned copy of your driver’s licence or some other form of photographic ID and a document with proof of address.
Our Tote review was impressed with the level of customer support on offer. For instance, customers can reach out via the following methods.
Live chat: Operational from 08:00 – 22:00 every day (except Christmas Day).
On top of that, the Tote provides an FAQ page which covers many of the basic queries you might have. It’s worth checking out if customer support is not online.
The new Tote is still a work in progress, but that is to be expected. With that said, there are many encouraging signs that this horse racing-specific bookmaker will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Promotions like Ten to Follow and the Tote Guarantee will attract many punters, as will the rollover prize pools on offer in the Scoop 6 and Jackpot bet types. (T&Cs apply, 18+)
This Tote review concludes if you’re a fan of racing, this bookmaker deserves to be on your radar.
