Free Bets Explained

When looking for a new betting site and sizing up the various bookmaker betting offers on our table of the best betting offers it is important to fully understand what they all mean. Some free bet promos may sound great and lure you into joining, only to realise there’s a bit more to it.  This is often the case with deals that aren’t offering enhanced odds or free bets. Just because they don’t sound great, doesn’t mean they aren’t a useful tool in your betting armoury.

In other cases, the wagering requirement may seem reasonable, but the minimum deposits make them unfeasible. However, with the right strategies, some basic sounding bonuses can be excellent tools. Remember always to do your research and read the terms and conditions carefully before accepting an offer.

Free Bets vs Signup Bonuses

There’s a clear difference between a bet offer and a sign-up bonus. Sign up, registration or welcome bonuses only ever get offered to new players. Once you’ve registered with a sportsbook, you can never take advantage of another sign up bonus.

Unlike welcome bonuses, bet offers may appear at any time. They can be anything from a two-for-one deal to an odds booster. Bet offers can also include free bets or risk-free bets.

Accordingly, a welcome bonus can feature a free bets offer, but not every free bets offer is a sign up bonus.

How we picked our Best Betting Offers

When we review gambling providers and betting sites, we study various aspects in detail. As we’ve gained experience, we’ve learned that these are the essential features of a reliable provider.

Reliable Promotions

In the ever-changing world of gambling operators, every betting site needs an edge. In an attempt to be the most attractive option, most offer tempting welcome bonuses and other promotions.

We like recommending sites that consider all customers, not only registration bonuses for new joins. There’s also a list of other requirements, but we’ll look into those later.

Safety and Security

In these days of cyber theft and identity fraud, you can’t be too safe. Safety is one of our critical focuses during an operator review. The following are some of the criteria we look at to ensure you’ll be safe with names we recommend:

  • Encryption. Any website we recommend has the latest encryption. Whether it’s SSL or TTL doesn’t matter, but your information must be securely encrypted.

  • Privacy Policies. It’s far too easy to skim over a betting site’s privacy policy or ignore it entirely. There are many essential aspects to consider about the privacy policy that could affect you profoundly. Firstly, where does the company store your payment and personal information? If it holds these details on-site, or in a local server, it’s an easy target for a data breach. We advocate using an operator that keeps the information off-site on a securely encrypted server. Some companies employ data management specialists with strict protocols to preserve data. Secondly, what’s the company’s policy regarding third-party businesses? If an operator has an open-trade policy with third-party’s, it pays to be wary. Preferably, a gambling provider shouldn’t share any of your information with a third party, unless it has your explicit permission.

  • Third-party verification. You don’t want random third-party companies to have access to your information. However, there are times when third-party proof is required. For example, when you’re making payments, you want a third-party service to confirm that it’s you.

Efficient Customer Support

Even the most efficient operator slips up and faces occasional issues. When a problem arises, you need access to well-trained and effective customer support. In our opinion, there are three main things you should expect from customer support as standard:

  • Suitable support hours. You require a support team that can help you when you’re awake and functioning. Naturally, 24-hour service is preferable, but not always a viable option. At the least, look for a company that provides eight to 12 hours of support every day.

  • Diverse contact methods. The world is ever-changing, and the best betting sites adjust to it. You don’t want to choose an operator that only offers email support if you prefer calling.  We like to recommend operators that host at least three different contact methods—preferably phone, email, and live chat at a minimum.

  • A reputation for resolutions. Response times are essential, and we’d suggest looking for an operator that has a reputation for responding quickly. However, you want more than mere replies. You need a company that’s known for resolving problems efficiently.

It’s undeniably the most critical aspect of any operator. An unlicensed betting site is a wild card. These companies aren’t held accountable to any governing body and are illegal in most countries.

Any operator that we suggest has a license from at least one gaming authority or gambling commission. Every governing body extends permits for a specific part of the world. Before signing up with an operator, ensure that it’s licensed to work in your country of residence.

Before we recommend any betting sites we review the available odds. Any operator that’s worth recommending offers fantastic odds on a variety of different sports and events. Typically, we compare the odds to similar providers to ensure that you get only the best.

Diverse Payment Methods

There are so many payment options on the market today, and you need access to an appropriate variety.

Most reputable casinos and sportsbooks accept a variety of e-wallets as well as more traditional payment methods. Most of the better establishments will also facilitate bank and wire transfers, although these may take some time to clear.

Good Ratings

As we mentioned earlier, you want a company with a reputation for quick problem resolutions. However, it’s far more than that. An operator with a sparkling reputation, in general, is what you need. Read many reviews to ensure that the sportsbook you like is trusted and enjoys excellent customer feedback.

Even the best sportsbook will have at least a few negative reviews, though. You can expect some disgruntled customers anywhere.

Look for those providers that have minimal negative reviews or at least a good ratio.

Compare the Best Free Bet Offers

We went through a myriad of different free bets and offers. We’ve listed only the best betting offers we could find, so you don’t have to put in the effort of making millions of comparisons.

Nevertheless, we can’t tell which operators will suit your gambling style best. That’s something only you can do. On our website, we have lists of the best new welcome promotions. We’ve also done intensive reviews on many loyalty bonuses and other promotions.

We’d suggest looking through those lists and trying to find the promotion, and operator, that best suits your betting sphere. Throughout this article, you’ll find many pearls of advice that will help you determine which company is right for you.

Best bookmaker offers

Why do bookmakers strive to have the best free bet offers? The reason firms hand out the best betting offers is they understand just how competitive the market is with established names fighting against start-up and online only betting sites to win your custom.

By having a deal that rates amongst the best bookmaker betting offer it ensures they leap off the page at bettors and entice them into opening an account and betting. It’s a buyer’s market and you should take full advantage of the situation.

Best Betting Offers & Free Bets for Existing Customers

Virtually every sportsbook on the market offers welcome bonuses to attract new customers. Comparatively, few have free bets and offers for faithful customers.

There are some online betting sites which have more offers than others. Some are better for specific sports. William Hill always has promotions for horse racing and Boylesports regularly have enhanced places for golf.

Sites including Betway, MansionBet, and Betfred change their offers daily. It is best to compare as much as possible and pick the bookmaker that gives you the best value for that event.

There are two main types of bonuses for existing customers:

Loyalty Programs

These types of programs have long histories that far precede the internet. For example, the TwinSpires loyalty program dates back to the opening of the Kentucky Downs racetrack.

Typically, loyalty programs give back bonuses for every specific amount you spend. If a company has a worthwhile loyalty scheme, you’d be wise to get in on the action. Some plans pay back in the form of free bets, matched wagers or deposit bonuses.

Other loyalty programs might give you prizes like plane tickets or vouchers for a restaurant. Every operator has a unique take on this type of scheme, and you’ll discover many different flavours.

If you want your loyalty program to let you wager more, you should look for a loyalty program that offers cash back and free bets.

Reload Bonuses

A reload bonus is like a matched deposit bonus, but for existing patrons. You can read more about matched deposits later.

Typically, a reload bonus gives you back a 50, 75 or 100% bonus on your deposit. In rare cases, the bonus funds can be worth as much as 150% of your deposit.

As with any offer, remember to take the wagering requirements into account when making a deposit. Some companies give a weekly reload bonus to encourage punters to deposit. Others may provide client-specific reload bonuses as a reward for faithful patronage.

How to Evaluate whether a Welcome Offer is Good

You will be wanting to get the biggest bonus possible, and the ability to unlock it as easily. It’s essential to check the ease of qualifying criteria before you attempt to take advantage of any offer.

Each welcome offer varies a little, but generally, there are two types of offer available:

Typical Offer 1) Bet a certain amount to receive a free bet

Typical Offer 2) Get a free bet bonus equal to or a percentage of your first deposit

The first type is easier to understand. There will be certain qualifying conditions. The qualifying bet will have minimum odds. The terms and conditions apply so you’re aware that there is no such thing as a free bet with no risk. The minimum odds are usually 2.00 (evens).

The second type of welcome offer has the potential for bigger bonuses. Here are the main things to look out for when evaluating bonuses.

  1. Percentage Matched – Each bookmaker will match your first bet or deposit. Some will 100% match what you put in, for example, if you deposit £100 they will give you a £100 bonus. Some may 50% match it, i.e. if you deposit £100 then they will give you £50.
  2. Wagering Requirements – You will need to bet your initial deposit a required amount before your bonus is unlocked.
  3. Qualifying Odds – Usually evens.
  4. Qualifying Sports/ Games – This might be more relevant to those wanting to bet on the casino, but not all markets you can bet on will contribute to unlocking your bonus. For sports, most free bets and  offers are based on the Win or Match Result market.

Different Types of Betting Offers

How Do New Customer Offers Work?

Better understand how these offers work, and you will make a better decision about which is right for you. It will also help ensure you meet the requirements to receive the bonus.

Each welcome offer varies, but there are generally two types.

Type 1) Matched Free Bet – Bet a required amount to receive a free bet.

Type 2) Matched Deposit Bonuses – Receive a bonus depending on the amount you deposit.

How Matched Free Bets Work

Matched free bet offers represent around 80% of welcome offers that were available last year, and we expect the same for 2021. This offer format is easier to understand, and the free bets are more straight forward to receive.

A UK betting site may have an offer such as ‘Bet £10 Get a £30 Free Bet’.

You will need a place a qualifying bet first. In our example, this is £10. This bet will have requirements to unlock the free bet. For instance, the first bet must put on an event with at least odds of 2.00 (evens). This ensures a low level of risk on qualifying bets and prevents players from winning every time when releasing their free bet.

Upon meeting these requirements, you will be able to use the free bet. Free bets are not returned as part of winnings. i.e. if you use your free £30 free bet, you will only receive the winnings from the bet, and not the £30 free bet stake itself.

How Matched or No Deposit Bonuses Work

Matched deposit bonuses aren’t unique to sportsbooks. Most gamblers are familiar with deposit and no deposit bonuses.

In the case of a no deposit bonus, you get rewarded with bonus funds for the simple act of registering. You receive a certain amount of bonus cash before you make a deposit. There are generally some requirements regarding the type of odds and wagers that you can use with the bonus. It’s worthwhile when you consider that you get to wager before you deposit, though.

A deposit, or matched deposit, bonus is similar but also the exact opposite. The sportsbook will give you a minimum and maximum range within which to make your first deposit. If you make a deposit of that size in the allocated time limit, the operator will double your outlay. As with the no deposit bonus, there are typically some requirements as to how you can use the funds. Therefore, you should read the terms carefully before jumping at the opportunity.

As you’ll see with most of the welcome bonuses listed here, you’ll have to meet a wagering requirement before you can withdraw any of your bonus winnings.

Before making your first deposit, check the requirements. A 50% bonus with a 10x wagering requirement means that, for a £50 deposit, you’ll get £25 bonus funds. However, before you can withdraw your winnings, you’ll need to wager £250.

First Bet Matched Offers

This is remarkably similar to the above bookmaker betting offers, it’s often just worded slightly differently. First bets matched offers comes from the amount you spend on your first bet. For example, if you make a deposit of £100 but only bet £10 on your first selection, you’ll be limited to a £10 welcome bonus in your account balance. This approach suits the bookmaker as it means they are rewarding genuine customers, those who want to bet on the site, rather than those chasing the free bets. This has been a problem that has plagued major and experienced bookmakers in the past.

Many want to be as generous as possible to their customers, giving lots of bet offers but this has led to misuse in the past. Some players arrive, do what they need to and get the free bet, make a profit from it then move on to the next bookmaker. This is something all firms are eager to avoid. To do this, they have to find the middle ground between being generous and fair to their new players. Another of the best betting offers you should look out for.

Risk Free Bets

The risk-free bet bonus is given by a few major bookmakers, including Paddy Power. This promotion doesn’t necessarily give you a free bet,  it allows you to gamble on sports knowing you can’t lose. A risk-free bet is never actually risk free!

Risk-free bets are one of the best promotions for a brand new punter. The setup for this offer is that you get to make your first (or first few) bet(s) without the risk of losing money. You use your own money to make a wager, and if you win, you get your return as you usually would. If you lose, the sportsbook will refund your account with bonus funds to the value of your losing stake.

Not every operator refunds the full amount. Some websites only offer 50% or 75% back, but it’s still better than losing all your money.

Typically, the website lays down some ground rules for what you can bet on, and the type of odds. Still, wagering on your favourite sport risk-free is worth making some adjustments to your usual wagering style.

Naturally, if you lose, the bonus funds usually come with a wagering requirement.

Retention betting offers

These are some of the best free bets and betting offers on the market for long-term punters. The idea behind a retention offer is to reward loyal customers and encourage them to keep betting with the same provider. Typically, a loyalty or retention offer consists of a risk-free bet, matched bet or odds boost. The wagering requirements are generally reasonable on this type of deal since it’s supposed to encourage loyalty.

In this review, we’ve done our best to ensure that you have all the information you need to make an informed decision.

As you search for free bets at a sportsbook, remember that you’re looking for an operator that:

  • Is safe
  • Is securely Encrypted
  • Has a good reputation
  • Offers reliable customer support
  • Has multiple payment options
  • Offers worthwhile promotions

Furthermore, as you consider each free bets promotion or betting offer, bear in mind that it should:

  • Have an achievable wagering requirement, if any
  • Give you enough time to meet the wagering requirements.
  • Not have an overly large minimum deposit.
  • Not have many unexpected or unreachable requirements.

Finally, don’t forget to look for a betting site that offers regular promotions for existing customers. It’s lovely to take advantage of registration bonuses, but if you plan on gambling for more than a few weeks, you need something more permanent.
