The race to become the UK’s Christmas Number One has just one week left to run, and it now looks likely that Wham! will secure the prized position for the second year running, with their perennial favourite, Last Christmas.
It had been expected that Band Aid would be the UK’s number one at Christmas, when plans were announced for an updated version of Do They Know It’s Christmas? to mark the 40th anniversary of the original song’s release. Indeed, Band Aid was the odds on favourite back in mid-November, but they sit at an underwhelming number 14 with just seven days left.
But it’s the duo of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley that head the latest betting odds, and currently sit top of the UK singles chart, with just one chart left to be announced on Friday 20th December.
UK Christmas Number One Odds 2024

There’s also a more sombre tinge to year’s race, with Liam Payne prominent in the betting just two months after his tragic death.

Previous Christmas No 1 songs
Since the turn of the century, the top of the charts have been dominated by the winners of reality TV show X-Factor, or songs desperately trying to derail the Simon Cowell train, including Rage Against the Machine’s Killing in the Name.
The end of X-Factor and a change to the way the charts are calculated saw a clear change at the head of the charts. Nowadays, streaming data is combined with physical sales figures, so you’re more likely to see songs from years gone by at or around the top of the UK singles chart.
