Arsenal grateful for manageable match-up

The goals have dried up a little for Arsenal in recent weeks after some significant injuries to their frontline forwards but they have been handed a last-16 Champions League tie which should not expose that weakness as some others might have done.

The Premier League side head to the Netherlands having won only one of their last four matches, a 2-0 success against struggling Leicester. They have drawn a blank in their other recent outings against Newcastle, West Ham and Nottingham Forest, claiming only one point from those fixtures.

However, PSV are out of sorts themselves, with only two wins in their last eight matches, and they have been beaten by Go Ahead Eagles, the seventh-placed team in the Eredivisie, in back-to-back league and cup matches.

PSV have kept only one clean sheet in their last 14 outings, so Arsenal’s makeshift forward line should fancy their chances of getting a goal or two.

Mikel Arteta’s team excelled in the league phase with six wins in eight matches including successes against Sporting, Monaco, Dinamo Zagreb and Girona in their four most recent games.

PSV did well to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit to Juventus in the play-off round by reversing that score in the home leg and winning in extra-time, but they have not won any of their last three domestic matches at the Philips Stadion and could find the Premier League side too hot to handle.

Home defence remains vulnerable

A trip to Eindhoven could be the ideal antidote for Arsenal’s goalscoring issues as the PSV defence find clean sheets extremely hard to come by.

Both teams have scored in 13 of their last 14 matches and only two of their last 16 fixtures have generated under 2.5 goals.

Another relatively high-scoring game looks likely after PSV’s group matches included 3-2 wins over Liverpool, Red Star Belgrade and Shakhtar Donetsk, a 4-0 victory over Girona and a 3-1 defeat by Juventus.

Arsenal kept things tight early in the group stage and their first four matches all ended with no more than two goals, but their four most recent Champions League games all went over 2.5 goals.

Nwaneri has a chance to shine

Teenage sensation Ethan Nwaneri has been handed an ideal opportunity to showcase his talent while Arsenal’s more established forwards are out of action.

The 17-year-old has scored seven goals this season including his first Champions League strike to put Arsenal 2-1 up in Girona and he followed that by scoring the final goal in the 5-1 romp against Manchester City.

The youngster is tipped for the top and should shine against the vulnerable PSV defence to add to his goal tally.
