Exclusive: Jermain Defoe makes Djed Spence claim ahead of international break

Updated on

It’s been a turbulent season to date for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, with Ange Postecoglou’s side having plenty of injury problems to deal with. One of the shining lights for Spurs in the 2024/25 campaign has been Djed Spence.

The former Nottingham Forest full-back has caught the eye for all the right reasons with Tottenham so far this season, having made 20 appearances in all competitions, in what has been a breakthrough year for Spence.

He recently chipped in with his first league goal for Spurs in a convincing 4-1 win over relegation-threatened Ipswich Town. His recent showings have prompted calls from supporters and pundits for Spence to receive a call-up to the England senior squad, in what will be the first squad that Thomas Tuchel names since taking charge of the national team after Gareth Southgate’s tenure reached a conclusion.

MyBettingSites caught up with former Tottenham and England forward, Jermain Defoe courtesy of bet365’s new Sub On Play On product ahead of the upcoming international fixtures, where the Three Lions are set to take on Albania and Latvia in the first two matches in their respective World Cup qualifying group.

When quizzed on Spence’s chances of receiving an England call-up, Defoe told MyBettingSites’ Jacob Potter that he would love to see the Spurs full-back given a chance in the England senior squad, whilst also labelling Spence’s recent performances as ‘amazing’.

“Why not? I think if you perform at that sort of level and show that sort of consistency in what is somewhat of a struggling team at the minute. It’s difficult for young players to come into a team that are not doing well.

“Especially if you’re the standout performer. It’s always based on merit when you get in the England squad and he’s done amazing. I would love to see it. It would be special for him and the club and his family.

“He’s been amazing, he’s been so, so good.

Spence and his Tottenham team-mates are set to return to action on Thursday, when they host Dutch side, AZ Alkmaar in the second leg of their Europa League tie, as they look to reach the quarter-finals stage of the competition.
