Villa can secure crucial points against deflated United
Aston Villa are in the awkward situation of being the team in sixth position heading into the final day of the Premier League season, knowing that even a win over Manchester United may not be enough for them to break into the top five and secure a Champions League place.
The Villans are level on points with the two teams directly above them, Newcastle and Chelsea, but with the Magpies having a goal difference that is 13 better than Villa’s while the Blues are 11 ahead, Unai Emery’s team may as well consider themselves to be one point behind those rivals.
A victory at Old Trafford would do the trick if Newcastle slip up against Everton or Chelsea fail to win against seventh-placed Nottingham Forest and Villa have been able to get what they needed over their last three games, beating Fulham, Bournemouth and Tottenham without conceding a goal.
A late goal conceded in the 2-1 defeat at Manchester City prior to that run could yet prove to be the moment that denied Villa a top-five spot, but they look capable of doing their part by securing a 20th league victory of the season.
Villa should certainly be the fresher side both physically and mentally after United endured a demoralising 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in Wednesday’s Europa League final in Bilbao.
Ruben Amorim’s team could not make an offensive breakthrough in a poor spectacle and morale is likely to be low in the home camp after they failed to salvage anything from a poor campaign.
One factor in United’s favour is their strong head-to-head record against Villa as they had won four meetings in a row before a goalless game at Villa Park in October. Villa haven’t won at Old Trafford since 2021, but this looks like a golden opportunity to change that.
United have failed to score in three successive matches, so with Villa odds-on to get the win they need, boost the potential return by backing them to win while keeping a clean sheet.

Watkins can make crucial breakthrough
Ollie Watkins was named in the latest England squad on Friday but his main objective will be to secure a top-five finish for his team and he looks a likely candidate to put his side in front at Old Trafford.
Watkins is seventh in this season’s Premier League top scorers list with 16 and has made some important recent contributions including the only goal in the 1-0 win at Bournemouth and the early strike that sent his team on the way to a 4-1 home win over Newcastle.
With Morgan Rogers, John McGinn and Marco Asensio set to be Villa’s chief creators in the absence of the ineligible Marcus Rashford and the injured Youri Tielemens, Watkins should get the chances to add to his goal tally.

Rogers can provide a helping hand
With United going through a goal drought and Villa’s last three matches having generated a total of just four goals, this is not likely to be a final-day thriller, so let’s start our bet builder suggestion with under four goals in the match.
Morgan Rogers to assist a goal is a key element in this bet and the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season has been in excellent form during their strong finish. He has assisted six goals in his last eight appearances, including the last two matches against Bournemouth and Tottenham.
Complete the bet builder with United’s Alejandro Garnacho to have at least two shots in the match. The 20-year-old will be keen to impress after not starting in the Europa League final.
