Benfica vs Chelsea Predictions and Tips

Benfica to book quarter-final spot

Benfica proved they have the credentials to win the Club World Cup by beating Bayern Munich 1-0 last time out, a result that sent the Portuguese giants into the last 16 as Group C winners.

Former Wolves boss Bruno Lage has got his side firing, with 10 goals scored across their three group matches, while they have been defensively sound with clean sheets in their last two fixtures.

Another stern test awaits in the shape of Premier League outfit Chelsea, who were expected to top Group D but had to settle for second place behind Brazilian side Flamengo.

The Blues have recorded wins over Los Angeles FC and Esperance de Tunis either side of a 3-1 defeat to Flamengo, a match they had to play with 10 men after Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the 68th minute.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has been chopping and changing his starting XI and this has perhaps contributed to some disjointed performances during the group stage.

Benfica have looked like a well-drilled outfit, last conceding in the 27th minute of the first game against Boca Juniors, and they look capable of advancing into the quarter-finals.

Di Maria to keep rolling back the years

Former Argentina international Angel Di Maria may be 37 years of age, but he continues to churn out consistent performances for Benfica and another star display could be in the offing.

The Rosario-born star scored nine goals in the 2024/25 campaign and he has kept the momentum going in the Club World Cup, netting in the draw against Boca before bagging a brace against Auckland City.

Di Maria has had 10 attempts in total across the three matches and he will fancy his chances of taking his goals tally to four for the tournament at the expense of Chelsea.

Duo to catch referee’s eye

Liam Delap wasn’t afraid to get stuck in for Ipswich Town last season, the striker picking up 13 yellow cards in all competitions, and that fiery nature has continued since his summer move to Chelsea.

The 22-year-old was cautioned in the defeat to Flamengo, one of three fouls he has committed in the group stage, and his full-throttle approach could see his name taken again.

Joining Delap in the book could be Benfica defender Antonio Silva, who was booked five times last season and has perhaps been fortunate to escape a caution in the Club World Cup.

The 21-year-old will be up against some tricky players in the shape of Cole Palmer, Pedro and Christopher Nkunku and a booking could be coming the Portugal international’s way.
