Madrid to march on but don’t bank on fireworks
Neither Real Madrid nor Borussia Dortmund have arrived in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup with much fanfare so don’t be surprised if their last-eight tussle at the MetLife Stadium is an underwhelming affair.
Real Madrid fired off 21 shots – 11 on target – in their last-16 tie with a shocking Juventus yet could only muster a 1-0 win.
Dortmund, meanwhile, rode their luck against Mexican outfit Monterrey as they held out for a 2-1 triumph.
Both teams are unbeaten through four fixtures and with Kylian Mbappe now back for the Spanish giants after a stomach bug, and clearly fresher than most, it’s Real who look the bet.
The idea that they win this by a landslide, or that the goals fly in at both ends, is questionable.
Apart from Dortmund’s crazy 4-3 win against Mamelodi Sundowns in the group stage, the Bundesliga aces have played three matches which have produced four goals.
As for Real, their four games have totalled 10 goals.
Dortmund’s high defensive line plays into the hands of Real Madrid, who have won each of their last four games against the Germans, and can make that five in East Rutherford. But not necessarily in a goals spree.

Vini to have key role in Dortmund demise
Real boss Xabi Alonso has a decision over how much pitch time to give Kylian Mbappe, which means he will be looking to Vinicius Junior to lead the line in East Rutherford.
The Brazilian has come off a fabulous season at the Bernabeu with 19 goals and 10 assists in the league and Europe, but, like so many players, he has struggled to reproduce that form in the US.
Thus far Vinicius has managed one goal and one assist, both in the 2-0 win over Salzburg in the group stage, though he remains a major threat to any defence.
He managed four of Real’s 21 shots in their 1-0 win over Juventus last time out and with a bit of luck should have got his name on the scoresheet.
Vinicius should thrive against a Dortmund side whose high line can be a liability so take him to score or assist in the match.
