Fluminense vs Chelsea predictions and betting tips

Palmer shooting spree to continue

Cole Palmer scored his first goal from open play in six months against Palmeiras, but that is not for lack of trying from the England midfielder.

The 23-year-old has 16 shots in his three starts in the Club World Cup and has tested the opposition goalkeeper five times in his last two games.

With his eye for goal back, expect Palmer to have a few attempts to test Fluminense keeper Fabio at the MetLife Stadium.

Blues could struggle against Brazilian underdogs

Chelsea lost to Flamengo in the Club World Cup group stage a few weeks ago, and the Blues could fall foul of another Brazilian side when they face Fluminense on Tuesday.

Enzo Maresca’s side needed a late own goal to secure their semi-final place against yet another Brazilian club in Palmeiras, and they were taken to extra time by Benfica in the last 16.

Chelsea have not been operating particularly well when faced with decent opposition in this tournament, and Fluminense certainly fall into that category after holding Borussia Dortmund to a draw in the group stage and beating Inter Milan 2-0 in the last 16.

That leaves Fluzao unbeaten in their last 11 competitive games, and they could make it 12 in New Jersey.

Fluminense midfielder could be one to watch

Fluminense midfielder Hercules has scored from the bench in each of their last two games, but he could be afforded a return to the starting lineup with Martinelli suspended for this semi-final clash.

The 24-year-old replaced the booked Martinelli for the second half against Al-Hilal, scoring a 70th-minute winner to follow his strike against Inter Milan. With confidence on his side, the former Fortaleza man could be one to watch at the MetLife Stadium.

Three goals were scored from just seven shots on target in Fluminense’s win over Al Hilal in the quarter-finals, and we could be in for a return to a low-scoring affair when they face Chelsea on Tuesday.

Fluzao’s five Club World Cup games have seen a total of just 37 shots on target and an average of 1.69 expected goals, with four of those fixtures featuring fewer than four goals.

Chelsea, meanwhile, limited Palmeiras to two shots on target and 0.21 expected goals in their quarter-final, and they have not really clicked going forward in this competition.

With nine of Fluminense’s last 11 games going under 3.5 goals, and the Brazilian side knowing that a tight showing at the back is their best chance of reaching the final, expect a tense affair at the MetLife Stadium.
