Newmarket July Festival Day 3 betting tips & predictions
Aidan O’Brien, who is enjoying yet another stellar year, saddles three runners on the card, including Italy, who will likely be a warm order in the Superlative Stakes, a race he’s won four times in the past.
Here are three betting selections, including William Haggas’s More Thunder, who should relish the step up to 7f in the Bunbury Cup.
- 14:50 Newmarket – More Thunder @ 11/1 with bet365
- 15:25 Newmarket – Secret Theory @ 9/2 with Paddy Power
- 16:00 Newmarket – Italy @ 5/2 with Tote
14:50 Newmarket – More Thunder
The William Haggas-trained More Thunder finished strongly when snatching an unlikely win on the Newmarket Rowley Mile Course in May and he very nearly did the very same in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot, the four-year-old eating up the ground late on and going down by only a head to George Baker’s Get It, who was supplementing his success in last season’s Stewards’ Cup.
The Night Of Thunder colt had looked to be playing for minor honours at best entering the final furlong, but the turbo soon kicked in and he was in front just a stride after the line under Tom Marquand.
Initially campaigned over middle distances by Sir Michael Stoute last year, Haggas has done wonders with him as a sprinter, but his future surely lies over this 7f trip and he should improve enough for this extra furlong not to be inconvenienced by his latest 3lb rise.
- Power Prices, Wonder Wheel & Acca Insurance among a range of top offers
- Innovative Super Sub offer means bets roll over to the player coming on
15:25 Newmarket – Secret Theory
Godolphin likely hold the key to this seven-runner three-year-old handicap, the famous royal blue silks to be worn by expected favourite, Bedouin Prince, Fifth Column and Secret Theory.
Preference is for the latter, who strangely seems to have been ignored in the betting having tasted defeat for the first time in three starts when finishing fifth in a valuable conditions race at Goodwood in May.
At the time, it was a rather disappointing effort from the son of Dubawi, but the winner, Amiloc, has since gone on to win the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes over 1m3f at the same venue and the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Beaten a shade over five lengths, it was a respectable effort from the Charlie Appleby-trained selection, who may simply not have appreciated the undulations at Goodwood. Furthermore, he’s since been gelded, suggesting that his mind may not have been completely on the job in hand.
An opening mark of 97 looks more than fair and his previous ready defeat of Archivist reads well, that rival having won twice since, most recently in a York handicap off 90. Mister Winston, who was well back in third on that occasion, ran out a good winner of a Chester maiden at the end of last month.

16:00 Newmarket – Italy
Aidan O’Brien has won the Group 2 Superlative Stakes on four occasions, most recently in 2023 with the brilliant City Of Troy, and he holds a strong hand in this renewal courtesy of Leopardstown maiden winner, Italy.
A son of sire of the moment, Wootton Bassett, he was all the rage in the betting on his debut over this distance of 7f in May and got the job done with a bit more in hand the bare margin of three-quarters-of-a-length suggests.
The form, although not bulletproof, looks solid with the runner-up, Thesecretadversary going on to finish second in the Listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and, given O’Brien’s dominance in the juvenile division this season, he’s hard to oppose.
Charlie Appleby has an even more impressive record in this race, winning it five times since 2016, and that statistic alone means both Saba Desert and Wild Desert deserve respect.
