1.50 Sandown – Headmaster

There was plenty of confidence behind Headmaster in a big-field handicap on the final day of Glorious Goodwood, but those who followed the gamble came away disappointed. Even so, this unexposed three-year-old remains a colt worth keeping onside and he looks primed to bounce back in the 7f handicap at Sandown for William Haggas.

A son of Dubawi out of three-time Prix de la Forêt winner One Master, Headmaster has a top-class pedigree and had looked a smart prospect when running out a dominant winner of a Haydock maiden on his penultimate start.

Plenty went wrong for him at Goodwood, where the undulating track and inexperience of his rider counted against him. This time around, with Tom Marquand back in the saddle and a return to a more conventional course, the signs point to a much better showing. Headmaster has too much ability to be written off, and it wouldn’t be the first time a Goodwood flop quickly turned things around.

2.40 Chester – Tabletalk

The absence of Hamish from the final declarations for the Listed Chester Stakes could prove significant, as it leaves the door wide open for the consistent Tabletalk to land a first success since the 2024 Melrose.

The four-year-old has produced a string of solid efforts this campaign, although his latest third at York in July was a shade below his best. That run came at a time when Tom Clover’s stable was struggling for form, but recent results suggest the yard has turned a corner.

This represents a slight drop in class for Tabletalk, who tackles Listed company for the first time this season, and the figures indicate he’s more than capable. He has already posted a Racing Post Rating higher than eight of the last ten winners of this race, which underlines the strength of his credentials.

Adding further intrigue is the application of first-time cheekpieces, a move that could provide just the extra focus he needs in the closing stages. If he can reproduce the level of his earlier-season runs, this looks a golden opportunity for him to get his head back in front.

3.15 Chester – Hawksbill

Hawksbill looks to hold strong claims of providing Hugo Palmer and Michael Owen with yet another Roodee success in Chester’s extended 7f handicap.

The son of Kameko comes here on the back of an excellent effort at Haydock, where he was beaten only a nose after rallying bravely late on. The form has already been boosted, with winner Sir Paul Ramsey running a cracker off a higher mark at York next time.

That near miss followed a couple of fine runner-up finishes in conditions races earlier this season, including when chasing home the highly regarded Amiloc at Goodwood.

First-time cheekpieces are added here, and with Jason Hart booked, Hawksbill looks the type to prove hard to pass around this tight track. Proven on a variety of ground conditions, he has the profile of a horse who can make his presence felt in a competitive handicap such as this.
