PSG can repeat the trick

Paris Saint-Germain finally lifted the Champions League trophy last season, recovering from a slow start before racing through the knockout stages and eventually thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in the final.

However, the way they built momentum during the second half of last season was frightening, and their experience and summer incomings mean they might be even stronger.

New goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier is a better fit for their tactical approach than Gianluigi Donnarumma, while defender Ilya Zabarnyi appears to be the long-term successor to their iconic captain, Marquinhos.

After beating Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal on their way to glory last term, PSG know they can match any opposition and are tipped to back up last season’s success.

Don’t discount Chelsea

It is also worth considering Chelsea, who have unparalleled depth thanks to their abundant transfer activity.

Boss Enzo Maresca is improving at the same rate as his squad after winning the Conference League and Club World Cup in his first season.

Maresca outmanoeuvred Enrique in the Club World Cup final and is clearly a smart coach.

The Blues face awkward away games at Bayern Munich and Napoli, as well as a visit from Barcelona, but should have no problems making the knockout stages.

A squad so deep is to be feared as the London club aims for its third Champions League title.

Guirassy can go again

Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy was the joint top scorer in last season’s Champions League, netting 13 times to tie with Barcelona’s Raphinha.

The usual suspects dominate the top of the Golden Boot market, but Guirassy’s pedigree makes him a real value prospect.

Dortmund have some awkward fixtures against Juventus, Man City, Tottenham and Inter. 

However, home games against Athletic Bilbao, Villarreal and Bodo/Glimt are real chances for the Guinea international to rack up the goals. A trip to Copenhagen could also offer opportunities.

The 29-year-old scored three times in as many games against Barcelona last season and with five goals from four club games so far in 2025-26, his 66/1 to finish top scorer again appeals.
