bet365 Cambridgeshire – Treble Tee to prove huge hit

It’s probably fair to say that the Crisfords didn’t have this prestigious handicap at the top of their list with this son of Persian King at the start of the season.

Treble Tee had really impressed when a debut winner of a strong 7f Newmarket novice last backend on his sole run as a juvenile, so much so that he held a 2000 Guineas entry in the spring.

But things didn’t work out as hoped and after defeats in novice company back at Headquarters and at Goodwood Treble Tee was gelded and given a three-month break.

On his return (he also underwent breathing surgery) and fitted with a tongue tie for his handicap debut at Thirsk, he shaped really well in finishing runner-up then advanced his form further when occupying the same spot in a strong Goodwood handicap before fairly scooting in at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting.

That victory over Doncaster’s straight mile really played to this tall, scopey gelding’s strengths and he settled well under patient tactics too before easily drawing clear in the last 1f.

He should have no problems with Saturday’s nine-furlong trip and the probable strong pace and straight track of the Cambridgeshire should provide a similar scenario.

A 4lb penalty for that facile victory leaves him 4lb well in on official ratings here, while there’s little doubting that he should prove capable of a fair bit better as he matures.

Any rain in the lead up to Saturday’s contest shouldn’t deter his backers either given his juvenile victory came on soft going, and Treble Tee clearly looks to have plenty going for him.

The Gosdens have always been one of the first stables to scrutinise when tackling the first leg of the Autumn double and in Fifth Column they look to have another likely contender.

Fifth Column went without a victory in four runs as a juvenile but a gelding operation over the winter transformed his fortunes and he was gaining his third success from four starts in 2025 when landing a hot Newmarket handicap at the July meeting, clocking a fast time in the process.

He couldn’t follow up when fifth in the Golden Mile at Glorious Goodwood (when not looking ideally at home on the undulations) but bounced back in style at York’s Ebor meet when getting up late on to land a big-field handicap over a mile.

He also deserved extra credit for that success given he had to wait to deliver his challenge over a furlong out and conceded first run.

The extra furlong of Saturday’s contest should hold no fears and he looks to hold rock-solid claims.

One last point to note is that four out of the Gosdens’ five previous winners of this race have been progressive three-year-olds and Fifth Column fits the bill perfectly.
