Welsh rivals to draw a blank
Welsh rivals Wrexham and Cardiff will meet for the first time since March 2002 as the two teams fight it out for a place in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup on Tuesday.
While just short of 150 miles separate the two grounds, there’s a fierce encounter expected between two teams that want to prove they are the best team in the Football League from Wales.
Wrexham are 16th in the Championship after only winning three of their 12 games in the second tier, but they have been difficult to break down at the Racecourse Ground. Phil Parkinson’s side have only lost twice in front of their own fans in the second tier, but they have also won just once.
A clash against a League One club would normally present a great chance to get back to winning ways, but the Bluebirds are leading the way in the third division.
Cardiff have won eight of their 13 league games, tasting defeat on only three occasions. They have been defensively sound, conceding just 11 goals in that time, and they should be able to frustrate the hosts.

Neutrals in for a treat in midweek
While a draw is the most likely result this week, that is not to say that there will be little excitement from the tie. Wrexham have struggled to keep clean sheets and both teams have scored in nine of their 12 Championship fixtures. With Cardiff in town, there’s bound to be goals with the League One leaders involved.
Wrexham midfielder Lewis O’Brien has been a creative force from the middle of the park and he has been accurate in front of goal as well. Seven of his 11 shots in the Championship have hit the target and he should be able to test the opposition goalkeeper once again.
The visitors should have plenty of efforts from midfield themselves, with Rubin Colwill firing 34 shots in 13 games. He is averaging 2.64 shots per fixture, so expect him to try his luck early and often.
Cardiff forward Yousef Salech has put himself about so far this season, conceding 24 fouls already, and with so much to play for this week, he should get stuck in once again.

Tempers to flare with pride at stake
Wrexham have not been punished that much for their challenges and they have only collected 21 yellow cards and one red in 12 outings in the Championship.
That return puts them joint-14th in the card standings in the second tier, while Cardiff are also in a similar position in the discipline standings in League One.
Cardiff have collected 24 yellows, with nine teams picking up more bookings in the third tier.
In games of this magnitude, though, the stats can sometimes go out of the window. There’s so much pride at stake on Tuesday that both teams will happily fly into challenges in order to gain a competitive advantage.
Wrexham’s fans will encourage their players to get stuck in as they try to overhaul Cardiff, who have challenged Swansea as the most successful Welsh club in the football pyramid in the last few decades.
