Next Wolves Manager odds: Ex-boss in frame for dramatic return

Wolves are on the lookout for a new manager, after the club finally pulled the plug and sacked Vitor Pereira. Betting sites have revealed the favourites to replace the Portuguese manager, and it’s ex-Wolves boss Gary O’Neil who heads the betting, with former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers also in the running.

Wolves are bottom of the Premier League with just two points, and the owners are understandably receiving a lot of criticism after Pereira signed a new contract at Wolves in September. He was backed by both the board and the fan base at the time, but things have turned sour, and the manager left after a 3-0 defeat to Fulham last weekend.

Gary O’Neil was Wolves manager last season, but was sacked after a poor start to the campaign and replaced by Pereira. In dramatic fashion, it looks like he is the clear favourite to take the job, but Rui Borges, Rob Edwards and Brendan Rodgers are also in the running.

Who are the favourites to be the next Wolves manager?

Gary O’Neil is the clear favourite to be the next Wolves manager after reports started circulating on Sunday night suggesting that the club were considering bringing him back to Molineux. The Englishman managed 63 matches for Wolves, winning 20, drawing 11 and losing 32. It didn’t end on bad terms with O’Neil last season, but he was sacked by Wolves in December 2024 after a defeat to Ipswich Town in the Premier League. Wolves were 19th at the time and four points from safety.

Although he had some good moments, it would definitely feel like a backwards step for the club if they were to rehire the manager who they placed Pereira with. O’Neil finished 14th in his first season in charge of the club and has also managed Bournemouth as well, so he does have Premier League experience, but there would definitely be concerns about his appointment.

Rui Borges is the current second favourite, with his odds at 4/1. The Portuguese boss is currently the manager of Sporting CP. He has managed 45 matches, winning 30, drawing nine and losing just six, so clearly has some good qualities, but he has never managed in the Premier League and has only ever managed in Portugal, so his inexperience would see him be another risky appointment.

Rob Edwards and Brendan Rodgers are also in the running. It would be surprising to see Edwards leave his current job at Middlesbrough as he currently has them second in the Championship, but he may jump at the idea of being back in the Premier League again. Edwards managed to get Luton promoted to the Premier League, which was a huge achievement, but they were relegated in their first season in the top flight. Despite this, he produced some strong performances with the Hatters and may do better with a stronger squad.

Rodgers left Celtic last week and has top Premier League experience after spells in charge of Liverpool and Leicester City. He did well at both of these clubs and started very well with them, so he could be seen as one of the more exciting appointments for Wolves. Spells at both clubs did fizzle out, however, and he was sacked by Leicester in April 2023, with the Foxes relegated from the Premier League that same season.
