Arizona Blaze is at his best when forcing the pace and stall three looks ideal for this prominent racer in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, with two hold-up horses drawn below him.

The son of Sergei Prokofiev made his breakthrough at the highest level when an impressive winner of the Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh last time.

That’s arguably the best piece of form from anything in this line up and he brings rock-solid Breeders’ Cup experience to the table given he went close in the Juvenile Turf Sprint last term. 

He arrives at Del Mar in far better form than he did in the previous campaign and has been on a big upward curve over the past few months, bar a poor run in the Nunthorpe (his second below-par showing at York).

Everything looks in place for a huge run and Arizona Blaze possesses the perfect combination of speed and stamina over the trip.

22:25 Del Mar – Sierra Leone

The late scratching of Sovereignty from the Breeders’ Cup Classic is good news for supporters of Sierra Leone, who looks the one to beat in the ante-post favourite’s absence. 

Sierra Leone dealt with fellow market protagonist Fierceness in this last year for a brilliant victory, and he arrives in good form after two strong performances at Saratoga in August.

He produced his best Racing Post Rating since the previous year’s Classic when landing the Whitney and deserves a big upgrade for his second in the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes on his most recent outing. 

Chad Brown’s four-year-old was severely hampered by a fallen rider early in the contest and found himself miles off the pace as a consequence. The fact he managed to get within a length and a half of the winner, who had a much better trip, was a brilliant effort.

That would have been a hard race for Sierra Leone, but he’s had 62 days off to freshen up for the big target, and a bold bid is anticipated from a respectable starting berth.

23:05 Del Mar – Notable Speech

Charlie Appleby has been banging in the winners lately and the Breeders’ Cup is his playground. In Notable Speech, he has an outstanding chance of landing the Mile for the third time in four years.

This doesn’t smack of a vintage Mile, with many of the best horses in Europe over the distance avoiding a trip to the US. 

Notable Speech was a close third in the 2024 running, but I suspect he wasn’t quite at the top of his game after a busy year, having been on the go since his debut in January.

My selection arrives fresher this time around and with a better prep run under his belt as he was a smooth winner of the Woodbine Mile after a luckless second in the Prix Jacques le Marois. 

His past two displays were much more like it after the sprinting experiment in the July Cup backfired, and he seems on excellent terms with himself. Expect him to go close from a good draw.
