Ashes Betting Tips

● England +1.5 on the handicap @ 4/5
● Harry Brook top England batter @ 13/5
● Usman Khawaja not to score a half-century in the series @ 3/1

Brook to impress

Brook is yet to be tested in Australian conditions but the 26-year-old has handled everything that Test cricket has thrown at him so far with consummate ease.

England’s vice-captain averages a remarkable 57.55 from 30 Tests, with 10 centuries in that run.

He was the only standout from England’s disappointing white-ball tour of New Zealand recently, especially a remarkable 135 in Mount Maunganui.

Brook will also benefit from avoiding the new ball in Australia, which can be a real struggle. Coming in at number five should be an ideal point for the Yorkshireman to make runs with the shine taken off the ball and bowlers toiling in the heat.

Brook has often been at his best away from home, he averages 75.44 in nine Test innings in New Zealand and 84.10 in ten innings in Pakistan, and he can once again star for this England team.

Visitors have a great chance

England have an extremely poor record in Australia, having not won a Test series there since the 2010/11 series. However with the home team sporting an aging squad and struggling with injuries, the visitors have not had a better opportunity to make an impact for a long time.

Captain Pat Cummins and fellow pace ace Josh Hazlewood are both out of at least the first Test in Perth, meaning the hosts may have to play two debutants in that first game.

In contrast with that England have a full-strength bowling attack that is almost certainly the most pacy to have played in Australia, with Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson and Ben Stokes all ready to steam in on the bouncy pitches down under.

Ben Duckett has been arguably the best opening batter in the world over the last two years and in Harry Brook and Joe Root the visitors have two genuine world-class players in their middle order.

Spin is an area of concern for the away side, but at the prices they are worth siding with to take the game to their opponents, an approach which they have favoured under the leadership of Brendon McCullum and Stokes.

Against a weakened and ageing Australian side, England could spring a real surprise and they are worth taking on the handicap.

Australia vs England tip 2: England +1.5 on the handicap @ 4/5

Khawaja’s time may be up

The opening batter position has been a big cause for concern for this Australian team for some time and those issues have not been resolved in the build-up to this Ashes series.

Jake Weatherald looks likely to be thrown in at the deep end to make his debut in Perth, but it is his opening partner who could be even more vulnerable.

Usman Khawaja has been a very good servant for his country, but he is almost 39 years old and has struggled to deal with pace recently.

The left-hander is averaging 15.38 in his last eight Tests and is a very tempting price not to make a half-century in the series.
