Hosts justify favouritism
Home advantage has been key at the Africa Cup of Nations in the past, as on 12 occasions the tournament has been won by the host nation, including when Ivory Coast triumphed in the 2023 edition.
Morocco are the hosts this time around and they are also the heavy favourites, a tag they more than justify given they have lost just twice since the last Africa Cup of Nations and have more than built on their success of reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2022.
Walid Regragui led Morocco to the last four in Qatar and remains in charge, while his squad is packed full of top-quality players, including captain Achraf Hakimi, who has been named in the squad despite recent injury concerns, Brahim Diaz and Youssef En-Nesyri.
With question marks over Mohamed Salah’s form for Egypt, Senegal’s stars perhaps being past their best and squad balance not what it could be with Nigeria, Morocco look the standout tip to lift the trophy and be crowned champions of Africa for the first time since 1976.

Stallions no strangers to being dark horses
Burkina Faso have never made it to a World Cup after narrowly missing out in qualifying for next year’s tournament, but they are a consistent threat at AFCON, reaching the semi-finals or better in three of the last six editions.
The Stallions only missed out on the play-offs for the 2026 World Cup by one goal and they outscored a Salah-led Egypt in that qualifying campaign to further underline their threat.
They may struggle to overhaul Algeria in Group E, but they should clinch second place in that section which, on paper at least, could open up a favourable route all the way through to the semi-finals.
Burkina Faso have previous at AFCON and they could stick around at this tournament for the long haul.

Side against chaotic Cameroon
Only Egypt have won AFCON more often than Cameroon, but the five-time champions are unlikely to mount a challenge for the title this time around given the chaotic nature of their build up.
President Samuel Eto’o sacked head coach Marc Brys following last month’s World Cup qualifying failure but the Belgian is refusing to go despite being replaced by David Pagou, with reports that two different squads have been named for this tournament.
As it stands, Brys won’t be in charge and big names such as captain Vincent Aboubakar, fellow forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and goalkeeper Andre Onana have also been left out.
The Indomitable Lions look anything but that, and in a tricky group that also contains defending champions Ivory Coast, Gabon and a Mozambique side that are no pushovers, they could suffer the ignominy of an early exit.
