In-form duo set for tense tussle
Arsenal and Aston Villa’s ability to last the pace in the title race will be tested when the two in-form sides meet at the Emirates in a festive cracker on Tuesday.
Villa have been on an outstanding run, make no mistake, but scratching beneath the surface of their results a bit shows they have often ridden their luck and, at key times, have had to rely on a late second-half surge to secure important victories.
You could look at it positively and say they are a team on the up who are demonstrating that precious ability to win when not at their best and grinding out results, or you could suggest they may be found out soon.
Only time will tell but Villa would certainly take a point on Tuesday, even if it would mean the end of their fantastic 11-game winning run in all competitions.
Arsenal, too, have had their fair share of fortune recently. Four of the Gunners’ last six goals have been scored by the opposition and they have only beaten Wolves, Brighton and Everton this month by a single-goal margin.
The hosts probably have the stronger squad overall and will look to dominate possession at the Emirates, like they usually do, but Villa are very dangerous on the break and you only have to go back to December 6 when Unai Emery’s side won at home 2-1.
Another tight affair is expected and the value pick could just be the draw at 10/3.
Watkins to hurt Gunners again
Ollie Watkins was Villa’s matchwinner on Saturday when he turned the game around after coming off the bench at Chelsea to score twice late on.
The England international has surely done enough to earn a start, but Emery may opt to keep him in reserve again to do more late damage.
Either way, the striker looks good value at 10/3 to score anytime on Tuesday.
He has a very good record against Arsenal, scoring six goals in 12 appearances against them, while at this stadium he has plenty of fond memories.
Watkins netted twice in a 3-0 win at the Emirates back in November 2020, while he notched another in a 2-0 victory at this venue in April 2024, and he was also on target in last season’s 2-2 draw in north London.
Key forwards to impress for both teams
The basis of the Bet Builder is for two of the key forwards on either side to impress, backing Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Villa’s Watkins to both register at least two shots on target.
Watkins only has three league goals this season but is right back in form following his crucial brace at Chelsea on Saturday, when he was only on the pitch for 33 minutes but amazingly had four shots on target.
Saka has a somewhat disappointing tally of just four league goals to his name so far this season, but he will be desperate to get back on a scoring spree and is certainly one of the players Villa must try to keep quiet if they are to get anything from their trip south.
Saka didn’t score against Brighton on Saturday but he had seven attempts at goal, of which two were on target, and he can test opposition keeper Emi Martinez at least twice on Tuesday.
Finally, adding in both teams to score boosts the bet up to 25/1. Both teams netted in Villa’s 2-1 win when the teams met at Villa Park earlier in the month, while there have been goals at both ends in all of Villa’s last six outings and in three of Arsenal’s last four games in all competitions.
Furthermore, three of the last four meetings at the Emirates have ended with both teams scoring.
