13.40 Fairyhouse – Blood Destiny
It surely won’t be long until Willie Mullins begins to assert his dominance in the Irish trainers’ championship but he still trails behind Gordon Elliott. This is the time of year that Mullins tends to hit full gear and Blood Destiny is set to run well in this valuable handicap chase.
Blood Destiny was a graded performer in his novice chase days and managed to win a Grade 3 at Navan in March 2024. He followed that up with a solid third behind Spillane’s Tower in the Grade 1 WillowWarm Gold Cup next time out.
Last victorious in a chase at Listowel over the summer, he was far from disgraced when finishing third in the Grade 2 PWC Champion Chase at Gowran. That form has worked out very well since, with the second winning the Savills Chase over Christmas.
Perhaps this foray into handicaps can facilitate a return to winning ways and a mark of 152 shouldn’t be beyond the talented seven-year-old.

14:40 Kempton – Kalif Du Berlais
Paul Nicholls has trained many great horses over the years and he has always been confident that Kalif Du Berlais is a top-class horse. The son of Masked Marvel was a Grade 2 winner here at Kempton as a juvenile hurdler and is actually 2/2 at the track.
His novice chase campaign last season was a bit of a mixed bag but he put it all together to win the Maghull Novices’ Chase at Aintree in April. The plan from there was to campaign him as a Champion Chase horse but connections had to change tact.
Things didn’t go to plan in the Haldon Gold Cup when he never really looked comfortable. Clearly he’s much better than that and the yard’s form is considerably better at the moment. Going back up in trip could help and it’ll be disappointing if he fails to bounce back at Kempton.

15:17 Kempton – French Ship
There are plenty of interesting candidates in Kempton’s Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle but it’s the Philip Hobbs and Johnson White-trained French Ship who gets the nod. The six-year-old is 2/3 this season and was an unlucky faller on the other occasion.
He’s clearly a progressive handicap hurdler and there could be more to come before the handicapper catches up. French Ship won with plenty in hand at Cheltenham in October and the third has boosted the form by winning since.
Following up at Newbury after that, French Ship travelled strongly under Harry Cobden and went on to score by just shy of two lengths. Whilst the handicapper has responded quite harshly to that performance, whacking him with a 10lb rise, he could still be a step or two ahead.
