Saturday’s ITV Racing Betting tips
A field of four go to post for the feature Grade 1 Clarence House Chase (3.30pm) from Ascot on Saturday, but it’s a mouth-watering race in prospect with Willie Mullins’ El Etait Temps locking horns with Jonbon once again. The rapidly progressive Thistle Ask and highly talented Gidleigh Park make up the quarter.
A total of four races will be screened live from Ascot, accompanied by three from Haydock, including the Peter Marsh Chase which sees Venetia Williams’ Royal Pagaille bid for an unprecedented third victory in the staying handicap.
Our expert has a trio of selections for ITV’s coverage, the first of which comes in the Grade 2 mares’ hurdle at Ascot (1.40).
1.40 Ascot – Nurse Susan
She’s now nine, but Nurse Susan has looked better than ever this season and appears to have been found another excellent opportunity by Dan Skelton.
The daughter of Doctor Dino is very lightly raced for her age and has an outstanding strike-rate, winning six times, most recently over 2m5f in Listed company at Sandown at the start of this month.
She’s only once contested a Grade 2 previously, finishing a highly creditable fourth of 19 in the Dawn Run Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March 2022.
A slight concern is this drop in trip, but she’s not short of gears and this track’s stiff finish will bring her guaranteed stamina into play.
She’s best treated on these terms and the Skelton yard could hardly be in better form.

2.00 Haydock – Konfusion
Sue Smith and Joel Parkinson’s Konfusion is almost unrecognisable from the horse that opened his account over fences off a mark of 92 only 11 months ago, the eight-year-old coming here off the back of a pair of Grade 3 victories.
Such has been his improvement, he’s been handed an entry in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and although that’s optimistic, even at this stage, it’s hard to know just how much improvement he has left in the locker.
His three wins this term have come off marks of 115, 126 and 136, recording Racing Post Ratings of 147 and 146 the last twice, which suggests his latest 9lb rise won’t be enough to stop him.
He’s getting a stone from dual winner Royal Pagaille, putting him on an ideal racing weight of 11st.

3.30 Ascot – Il Était Temps
Willie Mullins’ Il Etait Temps had little trouble in defeating Jonbon in the Celebration Chase at Sandown in April and arguably made even lighter work of him over the same course-and-distance when winning the Tingle Creek, so it’s hard to see those tables being turned.
The selection is rated 172, upwards of 6lb clear of his three rivals, and there’s a strong argument to say he should be even higher having run to Racing Post Ratings of 175, 173 and 178 on his last three outings.
He’s rattled off four Grade 1s and a Grade 2 in his last five races and looks the ultimate two-miler chaser, combining a high cruising speed with some fast, accurate jumping.
Il Etait Temps is versatile in terms of ground and tracks and a clear round should see him collect.
