NFL Conference Championship betting tips

In the AFC, New England Patriots visit Denver Broncos, with the home side reeling from the ankle injury suffered by their starting quarterback, Bo Nix, in last week’s dramatic overtime win over Buffalo Bills (8pm GMT kick-off).

The NFC battle promises to be even more keenly contested as NFC West rivals Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks lock horns for the third time this season (11.30pm GMT kick-off).

Broncos still have hope

Last Sunday saw the Broncos go through an emotional rollercoaster as they held on to beat the Bills 33-30 in an epic divisional round encounter that went to overtime, but lost their starting quarterback Nix to an ankle injury in the process.

Sean Payton’s team will now field back-up Jarrett Stidham, who last started a competitive game in 2023 and who has not thrown a pass in the league this season, so it’s understandable that the AFC number one seeds have been made underdogs at home against the Pats.

However, Denver did not depend just on Nix for success, which has largely been achieved by their impressive defence and that remains intact. Stidham, despite his lack of recent game action, is also one of the more serviceable back-ups in the league and if he can turn in a steady performance the Broncos can at least keep the game close.

Both teams went 14-3 in the regular season without facing particularly arduous schedules and the Broncos should still be able to give the Pats a tougher test than they have had in their first two playoff games, which were relatively comfortable wins over Los Angeles Chargers (16-3) and Houston Texans (28-16)

In what should be a low-scoring game, the handicap start offered to backers of the Broncos is attractive.

Maye may find the going tough

The Texans’ defence gave New England quarterback Drake Maye plenty of problems last week, sacking him five times and forcing an interception and two lost fumbles.

A poor performance from Houston quarterback CJ Stroud put paid to their hopes of glory, but Maye managed only 179 passing yards – his second-worst effort in 19 games this season – despite throwing three touchdown passes and the Broncos defence can limit him to no more than 225 passing yards too.

Denver led the league in the regular season with 68 sacks – 11 more than any other team – and the Pats’ offensive line have had problems protecting him against the stronger defences they have faced this season.

McVay’s Rams can find a way

The third meeting this season between NFC West rivals the Rams and the Seahawks in the NFC Championship game at Lumen Field could be a classic if their first two clashes are anything to go by.

Those meetings were decided by margins of two points and one point, with the Rams winning 21-19 at So-Fi Stadium in Week 11, when they intercepted Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold four times.

Seattle somehow got their revenge at home in Week 16 despite trailing 30-14 in the fourth quarter, rallying to win 38-37 with a two-point conversion after both teams scored touchdowns in overtime.

The Seahawks crushed the San Francisco 49ers at home last week, while the Rams have come through two tough road games, beating Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears to earn another crack at their divisional rivals.

With their Super Bowl-winning combo of head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford still intact, they should at least go close to returning to the big game and even the small handicap start of 2.5 points could prove worth taking.

Nacua could be peerless in Seattle

The Rams have no shortage of stars in their team, but wide receiver Puka Nacua has been sensational since he was drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 draft.

Nacua was second in the league (to Seattle’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba) with 1,715 receiving yards this year and has added 167 in two playoff appearances.

He is worth backing to score a touchdown against the Seahawks after they struggled to contain him in the teams’ most recent meeting.

Nacua had 12 receptions for 225 yards and two touchdowns against the Seattle defence in Week 16 and has scored TDs in three of his subsequent four appearances.
