Neither Attack Looks Like Breaking the Game Open

Slovenia’s preparations were undermined when Benjamin Sesko was ruled out with a shin problem. The Manchester United striker has now been absent from the national side for close to a year, and he is comfortably their most dangerous attacking player.

Scotland’s situation is starker still. Every one of the five strikers named in the World Cup squad has missed out here, with Lawrence Shankland and Che Adams both unavailable. Oli McBurnie returns after five years away and Kieron Bowie has been recalled, but this is a forward line assembled from necessity.

The tournament numbers make the point. Sporar Inherits the Responsibility

With Sesko sidelined, Andraz Sporar is expected to lead the Slovenian line, and he arrives in reasonable touch after scoring twice for Slovan Bratislava earlier this month.

He also faces a Scotland back line that has been rebuilt rather than rested. Tierney’s withdrawal removes an experienced defender, uncapped players are in contention across the back four, and a side meeting its manager for the first time this week will take time to settle defensively.

Slovenia have home advantage, Jan Oblak behind them winning his 85th cap, and the greater continuity of the two teams. If a goal arrives, Sporar is the most likely source of it, and the price reflects a striker who has gone under the radar behind Sesko.
