France vs Senegal Betting Tips

France begin their 2026 tournament campaign against Senegal in a standout Group I fixture on Tuesday, 16th June, with the match kicking off at 8:00pm BST. Our expert has analysed the key stats and betting markets, so read on for the analysis behind his selections.

Senegal Poised to Frustrate Favourites

While France are the rightful favourites in the 1X2 market, the current odds for a victory appear too short for an opening match. Their opponents, Senegal, have proven themselves to be a highly competent side in recent years, capable of challenging top-tier nations.

Pape Thiaw’s men have secured impressive results, including victories over both Egypt and Morocco in 2026. They also demonstrated their quality on European soil in 2025, delivering a convincing 3-1 win against England at Wembley, which marked Thomas Tuchel’s first defeat as head coach.

A compelling historical trend also supports opposing the French. Since the 1998 tournament, consistently betting against the nation ranked number one by FIFA would have yielded a significant 163% return on investment. This suggests that the market often overestimates the top-ranked side.

Although France possess arguably the best squad in the competition, Senegal famously defeated them 1-0 in the opening match of the 2002 tournament. Considering the historical data and Senegal’s form, backing the draw presents a well-reasoned selection.

Les Bleus to Get Stuck In

France are expected to control possession, but they face a Senegal side capable of causing significant problems in transition, which should lead to a high tackle count for Didier Deschamps’ team. The data strongly suggests that backing France to make at least 15 tackles is a solid proposition.

Senegal’s style of play consistently forces defensive actions from their opponents. In their warm-up games for the tournament, they drew 19 tackles from Saudi Arabia and 21 from the USA. During their recent AFCON campaign, they forced an average of 16.86 tackles per game from their opposition.

France’s own recent performances align with this trend. They made 20 tackles in their final preparation match against Northern Ireland and 17 tackles in the game against Ivory Coast, demonstrating a willingness to engage defensively.

This pattern was also evident at the last major international finals, where Les Bleus surpassed the 14.5 tackle line in six of their seven matches. Their average during that competition was 19.71 tackles per game, and they made at least 20 tackles in all three group stage fixtures.

Defensive Questions Linger for Deschamps’ Side

Didier Deschamps’ side possesses one of the most potent attacks in international football, but their qualifying campaign exposed defensive vulnerabilities that Senegal are well-equipped to exploit. This points towards value in the Both Teams to Score market.

France conceded in three of their six qualifying matches, including two goals against Iceland, a team ranked significantly lower than Senegal. Furthermore, both teams found the net in all four of France’s friendly matches in preparation for the tournament.

Senegal carry a considerable threat in forward areas. They scored 22 goals across 10 CAF qualifying matches and have found the net in 12 consecutive competitive outings. With players like Nicolas Jackson, Sadio Mané, and Ismaïla Sarr operating in Europe’s top leagues, they have the individual quality to breach the French defence.
