Expect Goals in South London
Matthias Jaissle’s start at Newcastle has been unbeaten but rarely comfortable. The Magpies have taken one win and two draws from their opening three Premier League fixtures, and the scorelines tell the story: 2-2 at home to Liverpool, 2-0 away at Spurs, then 2-2 with Bournemouth. Their Carabao Cup second round tie finished 3-2 against West Bromwich Albion.
Meanwhile, Millwall arrive with a defence that has been pulled apart twice in a fortnight, shipping five at Southampton and three at home to Wrexham. The 4-0 win over Bolton that followed looks emphatic on paper, but Millwall led only 1-0 until the 83rd minute before three goals in five minutes flattered the margin. With Alex Neil missing a long list of players and Newcastle rotating a deeper squad, the conditions favour a game that opens up rather than one that grinds.

Newcastle favourites to continue cup run
Newcastle should have enough to win. Even a changed side carries a clear class edge over a Championship team that has lost two of its last three, and Jaissle’s rotation still draws on a squad that won this competition in 2025.
However, as mentioned before, Newcastle have been weak at the back. Both teams have scored in three of their four competitive matches this season, and their solitary clean sheet came in the win at Tottenham that ended a five-game winless run on the road, a run in which they lost four, conceded 13 and scored just four.
With goals expected, backing Newcastle to win the match in a double adds some good value.

Feisty Affair at The Den Points to Cards and Corners
Big tackles and physical matchups look a near certainty here. Millwall have built their identity on making The Den an uncomfortable place to visit, and a side missing players is far more likely to defend in a block and break up play than to try to outplay a Premier League team. Newcastle, meanwhile, will be looking to take the sting out of the tie early, and a rotated side still finding its rhythm tends to concede more free kicks in midfield than a settled one.
The referee will have to do whatever is needed to reduce the number of fouls/big tackles, and this could see him produce some early cards.
Meanwhile, with goals aplenty in fixtures involving the pair this season, we expect a lot of chances, and this will no doubt see lots of corners taken.
