Netherlands vs Japan Betting Tips

The Netherlands and Japan begin their 2026 tournament campaigns on Sunday in what should be an entertaining match-up. Check out our expert analysis and betting selections for the match right here.

Value in the Stalemate as Group F Favourites Meet

While the Netherlands are priced as favourites to win their opening match, Japan represent a significant challenge. The data suggests the Oranje are too short in the 1×2 market for this fixture, which brings the draw into play as a value selection.

At the previous tournament, the Dutch were priced similarly to beat Ecuador (1.85) in a group stage match that ultimately ended 1-1. Ronald Koeman’s side has drawn five of the six matches they have played since the start of 2025 where their odds were above 1.50.

Japan enter this game on a seven-match unbeaten streak and have proven difficult to overcome. They were priced in a similar range (3.00-4.00) for their knockout game against Croatia in 2022, which was level at 1-1 after 90 minutes. Given these are the two strongest teams in Group F, a draw would be an acceptable result for both sides, and they may settle for a point if the match is level late on.

High-Pressing Japan to Drive Up Throw-In Count

Matches involving the Netherlands do not typically see a high number of throw-ins, with their games since 2025 averaging just 28.14. However, they face a Japan side whose counter-pressing style is likely to inflate the total and push it over the 32.5 line.

This was evident in the Netherlands’ warm-up fixtures for the competition. Their match against Algeria saw 48 throws, while the game against Uzbekistan produced 33, with the bet landing in both instances.

Japan’s recent record points strongly towards a high throw count. All four of their competitive fixtures since the beginning of 2025 have seen 40 or more throws, with an average of 46 per game. This trend extends to their previous tournament appearance, where this bet won in all four of their matches.

Furthermore, at the 2022 finals, the average throws per game across the competition was 39.91, well above the line set for this clash. The game against Croatia, where Japan had similar odds to win, saw 38 throws in normal time, reinforcing the potential for a high count here.

Van Dijk an Aerial Threat from Set-Pieces

At 34, Virgil van Dijk remains a cornerstone of the Dutch defence, but his contribution from set-pieces provides an interesting angle for a longshot bet. His aerial prowess makes him a prime candidate to score with a header against a compact Japanese defence.

During the qualification phase, Van Dijk scored two goals and averaged 0.9 headed shots per 90 minutes across his eight appearances. This highlights his role as a key target man for the Netherlands, who were one of the most potent attacking sides in the European qualifiers with 27 goals.

His club form for Liverpool during the 2025/26 season further supports this selection. The defender scored six Premier League goals, five of which were headers, and he registered an impressive 0.6 headed shots on goal per 90 minutes. Against a solid Japanese defence, Van Dijk’s physical presence could be the key to breaking the deadlock.
