Next Prime Minister betting: Streeting’s Labour leader odds shorten

2H662G9 The Street Sign for Downing Street in London where.the residences of the British Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer are located

Bookmakers have been forced to cut the odds of Wes Streeting becoming the next Prime Minister, as rumours of him mounting a challenge in the aftermath of the King’s Speech gathered pace.

The Health Secretary has never hidden his desire to become Britain’s Prime Minister, and with Labour suffering a terrible set of results in May’s local elections, the time may now have come for him to throw his hat into the ring.

Next Prime Minister betting odds

Until recently, Andy Burnham had been the clear favourite to be the next leader of the Labour Party. However, the Mayor of Greater Manchester could only become Prime Minister once he secured a seat in parliament, and so he’ll effectively be out of contention if a leadership challenge comes in the next few days.

Burnham remains the slight favourite with some new UK betting sites, including Star Sports and Bet Goodwin, but a number have now flipped their markets, shortening Streeting’s odds from 6/1 to as short as 2/1 in places.

Who are the favourites to be the next Prime Minister?

As already mentioned, Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting are the two names at the head of the betting to become the UK’s next Prime Minister.

Streeting (5/1 to become the next PM), the MP for Ilford North, was first elected to parliament in 2015. He was quickly promoted to the shadow cabinet following Sir Keir Starmer’s appointment as Leader of the Labour Party, becoming the Shadow Health Secretary in 2021, before taking up the equivalent role when Labour came back into power in July 2024.

Andy Burnham (4/1) spent 16 years in parliament, as the MP for Leigh, including periods as the Shadow Secretary for Education and Health before being promoted to Shadow Home Secretary under Jeremy Corbyn. Burnham left parliament in 2017 to become Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017, and was re-elected in 2021 and 2024. However, he has made his desire to return to parliament abundantly clear, with his sights undoubtedly set on challenging Keir Starmer in due course.

Next on the list of contenders to become Prime Minister is Angela Rayner, whose appointment would most likely trigger a change in policy towards the left. Rayner is a former Deputy Prime Minister who many feel would appeal best to the more traditional working class roots of the Labour Party, and she may emerge Streeting’s main rival, should Burnham be unable to stand.

Former Labour leader Ed Miliband is the other name in contention for the role, while Nigel Farage can be backed at 20/1, on the assumption that Starmer holds on to the post until the next General Election.
