Alcaraz proves betting sites wrong in 89/1 French Open turnaround

Updated on

The in-play odds at UK betting sites were turned on their head in the French Open final, as Carlos Alcaraz produced a comeback for the ages.

The Spaniard was staring down the barrel of defeat to World Number One Jan Sinner, facing three match points at 5-3 down in the fourth set. At that stage, punters were piling into Sinner to complete the job, with over £181,000 traded on the Italian to win at prohibitive odds of 1.01 (1/100) on Betfair’s exchange.

At that moment, Alcaraz’s odds to win the French Open for a second time touched 89/1, but the defending champion wasn’t going to be beaten, and went on to produce a staggering turnaround, ultimately winning 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6, to the delight of the Roland Garros crowd.

Records beaten in French Open epic

The match between Alcaraz and Sinner actually lived up to the hyperbole being thrown around both during and after their final, with a number of significant records being broken in the process.

At just a minute shy of 5½ hours, it became the longest men’s final in French Open history, and the second-longest Grand Slam final ever. The match may well have run even further, were it not for the recently introduced rule to decide matches with a fifth-set tiebreak.

Alcaraz followed in the footsteps of Gaston Gaudio and Novak Djokovic, becoming only the third man in the Open Era to win a major final after saving championship points.

The match also signalled something of a generational shift, as the first Grand Slam final to ever be contested by two players both born in the 2000s.

Sinner remains favourite for Wimbledon glory

Despite letting three championship points pass him by, Jan Sinner remains the favourite to exact a level of revenge by winning the Wimbledon crown. The 23-year-old Italian has never progressed past the semi-finals at SW19, but betting sites still have him as the 13/8 favourite to secure what would be the fourth Grand Slam of his career.

Alcaraz sits just behind him in the latest Wimbledon betting odds, at 17/10, and the defending champion will surely prove a popular bet, having extended his winning streak over Sinner to five matches in a row.

Novak Djokovic remains prominent in the betting, despite being in the twilight of his career, and hinting at retirement in the aftermath of his French Open exit, while betting sites make Britain’s Jack Draper the fourth favourite to send his home country tennis crazy (for at least two weeks). Draper has enjoyed an impressive few months, winning at Indian Wells in March, before reaching a second Masters final in Madrid. His exploits have seen him soar up the rankings to a career high fourth position, but his Wimbledon record remains a modest one, having never made it beyond the second round in three attempts.
