Greece vs Scotland Betting Tips

Our betting expert has three Greece vs Scotland tips for Saturday’s World Cup qualifying match at Karaiskakis Stadium, Piraeus (kick-off, 7.45pm). Scroll down for the analysis behind his selections.

Scotland set for Greek tragedy

Scotland are guaranteed at least a play-off place for next summer’s World Cup and they will take realistic hopes of automatic qualification into the final round of Group C fixtures if they avoid defeat on Saturday, although that will be easier said than done against wounded animal Greece.

The Greeks’ hopes of a top-two finish in the group were ended after away defeats to Scotland and section leaders Denmark last month, but they were unfortunate to lose 3-1 at Hampden – a match where they took the lead and dominated for large spells.

Ivan Jovanovic’s side will be seeking revenge back on home soil and they will fancy their chances having already beaten Scotland 3-1 on aggregate when the two teams met in the UEFA Nations League promotion/relegation play-offs back in March.

Greece may also benefit from Scotland not knowing whether to go for the win or settle for a draw which would set up a group decider with Denmark next Tuesday – the Danes are currently above Steve Clarke’s side on goal difference and host group whipping boys Belarus on Saturday night.

That uncertainty, coupled with the absence of some key players, including first-choice goalkeeper Angus Gunn, makes Scotland vulnerable for this trip to Piraeus, and with nothing to lose, Greece can take full advantage.

Tzolis should play key role for hosts

This will be the fourth meeting between these two sides in less than eight months, and while Scotland have triumphed in two of the three previous clashes, Greece were emphatic 3-0 winners in Glasgow in March, a match that saw Christos Tzolis get on the scoresheet.

Club Brugge winger Tzolis has been in top form for his club this season, producing 17 goal involvements in 23 appearances across all competitions, while he has also netted twice for Greece in this qualifying campaign, including in last month’s 3-1 loss at Denmark.

The 23-year-old is a creative spark for the Greeks and he could play a starring role on the left of the attack, especially as right-back has been a problem position for Scotland of late.

Ferguson part of defensive approach

With a draw likely to represent a positive result for Scotland, head coach Clarke will likely set his side up to defend, just as he did to great effect in their group opener – September’s goalless draw away to Denmark.

Such an approach would certainly increase the likelihood of less than three goals being scored in the match and at least one of the teams failing to hit the back of the net.

With Scotland likely to sit back, Greece will expect to do the majority of the attacking and should win the most corners. The National have earned seven more than the Scots in this qualifying campaign.

Completing this bet builder, Scotland midfielder Lewis Ferguson looks a prime candidate to give away at least two fouls.

The Bologna star, who scored his first international goal in last month’s reverse meeting at Hampden, has given away more free kicks than any Scotland player in qualifying (nine), conceding, on average, a foul every 30 minutes.
