Marseille vs Newcastle betting tips

Marseille and Newcastle United lock horns on Tuesday night, with the two teams having experienced contrasting starts to their respective Champions League campaigns.

The Magpies travel to the French Riviera following a superb 2-1 victory over Manchester City, which came less than 24 hours after Marseille thumped five past Nice to close the gap on Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

Newcastle to extend positive run of form

Prior to Saturday’s momentum-shifting result at St. James’ Park, Newcastle had only registered three wins in their opening 12 Premier League fixtures.

It took them just four outings to rack up as many triumphs on the Champions League stage, having impressively dispatched Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica and Athletic Bilbao after narrowly losing to Barcelona in the opening matchweek.

That leaves the Magpies in sixth position heading into this tie, a substantial 19 places above their French opponents in the league phase table.

It’s been the complete reverse for Marseille, who have performed well domestically but come up short in Europe.

Les Olympiens have lost three of their first four Champions League contests, although at least managed to record a convincing 4-0 win over hapless Ajax.

Newcastle have never taken maximum points in four consecutive Champions League meetings, but you can expect this statistic to change following Tuesday night’s action.

Will Marseille continue to misfire?

Although they’ve had no issue finding the net on Ligue 1 duty, Marseille have been far less prolific in their Champions League exertions.

Aside from September’s destruction of Ajax at the Stade Vélodrome, Roberto De Zerbi’s men have failed to register more than one goal in each of their other three European match-ups and they couldn’t get on the scoresheet at all during their 1-0 defeat to Atalanta.

Furthermore, Marseille’s attackers face the daunting prospect of coming up against one of the meanest defences in the competition.

Newcastle have already kept three clean sheets, while only two moments of individual brilliance from Marcus Rashford have resulted in Nick Pope’s net being breached.

There’s also been a handful of Premier League shut-outs, with Aston Villa, Leeds, Wolves, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest all unable to lay a glove on Newcastle’s backline.

Gordon’s genius and Newcastle’s set-piece count

We’ve analysed the stats and scanned the markets to provide you with an enticing three-fold Bet Builder, which can be secured at a price of 20/1 with leading bookmaker bet365.

Only Nigeria international Victor Osimhen has registered more direct goal involvements in this season’s Champions League than Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon.

The versatile attacker has already claimed four goals and one assist, while he’s also recorded more shots than any other player in Eddie Howe’s squad.

Although he’s only just recovered from a niggling hip injury, Gordon is expected to start given the importance of his recent contributions.

Newcastle have been awarded 25 corners in their opening four Champions League match-ups – that’s an average of over six per match.

The Magpies’ last continental away fixture produced 12 corners overall, with the visitors earning five of these set-pieces.

Marseille have committed more fouls than 33 of the remaining 35 clubs competing in this season’s Champions League, with only Juventus and Slavia Prague conceding a greater number of free-kicks.

The nine-time French champions also currently have the worst disciplinary record in the competition, thanks to picking up 12 yellow cards and a solitary red card so far.
