Chelsea can surge into top four contention
Aston Villa’s title challenge petered out a while ago and now Unai Emery’s men find themselves battling to hold on to a place in the top four, although in all likelihood fifth spot will be enough for Champions League qualification this season.
Chelsea are just six points behind their hosts, and a win on Wednesday would leave them just three points adrift of the top four, irrespective of results elsewhere in this midweek batch of games.
Villa were sensational at home right up until the turn of the year, but their form at Villa Park has nosedived. The Villans have lost three of their last six at home, and overall, their form has been poor, with just one win in their last six games.
The hosts come into this midweek round of fixtures after arguably their most disappointing result of the season as they slipped to a 2-0 loss at doomed Wolves. Admittedly, they were perhaps unlucky on the balance of play, but the performance was still a poor one.
Chelsea, in contrast, impressed in defeat at pacesetters Arsenal and they may have snatched a point had it not been for Pedro Neto’s dismissal with 20 minutes remaining. The Blues have improved since Liam Rosenior took charge and their only losses during his tenure have come against the Gunners, and they look decent value to claim maximum points on Wednesday.
The Stamford Bridge side have five wins in their last seven road games across all competitions, with two defeats at the Emirates during that run, and they can re-establish themselves as serious top four contenders with three points at faltering Villa this week.

Pedro can get back among the goals
Joao Pedro has 11 Premier League goals in 28 games this season and he can add to that tally at Villa Park after drawing a blank at Arsenal. The Brazilian forward has four shots, two on target, at the Emirates Stadium and a similar attacking output would probably be enough to see him get on the scoresheet in Birmingham.
Pedro had scored six goals in seven games across all competitions prior to Sunday’s loss in North London, and he can get back among the goals against a Villa defence that is clearly lacking a bit of confidence right now.

Palmer and Pedro feature in shots fourfold
Pedro had two shots on target against Arsenal and can match or better that at Villa Park. Pedro is shooting with an accuracy rate of just under 50% for the season, and he’s had a hefty 14 shots in total across his last three league games. He may only need two or three attempts to record two on goal.
Fellow Chelsea attacker Cole Palmer is averaging over two shots per game for the season, with 0.8 per game on target and a further 0.5 per game blocked. Palmer had a quiet game against Arsenal, but prior to that, he’d had at least three attempts in four successive league games, and he can at least force two saves.
For Villa, Morgan Rogers stands out as a contender to at least test the visiting keeper and Emiliano Buendia can register at least two shots.
Buendia failed to have a shot against Wolves, but that ended a run of eight consecutive league games where he has had at least one attempt, with multiple shots in five of those fixtures.
Rogers had four shots against Wolves and two of those were on target. Rogers averages 0.9 shots on target per game in this competition for the season, and he’s had at least one shot on target in four of his last five league outings.
