Dubois vs Wardley 2 preview: O2 Arena, Saturday 17 October
Five months on from their first meeting, Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley do it again at London’s O2 Arena, with Dubois’s WBO title on the line. Wardley started that first fight about as well as he could have, dropping Dubois ten seconds in and again in the third, but Dubois worked his way through it, landing 179 punches to Wardley’s 97 as the fight went on, and the referee stepped in during the eleventh round to make him a two-time champion.
What’s easy to lose from the outside is how brutal that stoppage actually was. Wardley was still searching the crowd for his mother afterwards, just to let her know he was okay, and the cut across his nose is an old wound that’s reopened before now. Going again this soon feels like a gamble, and I’d have liked to see him given longer to recover from it.
But I understand why he hasn’t waited. There’s a lot sitting behind this fight for both men. Win it, and Wardley puts himself in line for the kind of fights that could make him British boxing’s next genuine crossover star. He’s got the character for it, and the goodwill from a fight that bloody tends to earn a fighter plenty of credit regardless of the result. Lose it in a tight fight, or to a cut, and I don’t think it damages him much. Fall apart in another slugfest the way he nearly did last time, and that’s a different conversation.
Dubois looks sharper for it too, more guarded in the build-up than usual, which with him tends to mean he’s taking it more seriously rather than less. Stop Wardley again in similarly dramatic fashion and he’s arguably the most marketable heavyweight in Britain right now.
Dubois to win again
Daniel Dubois already solved the puzzle Wardley presented once, recovering from two knockdowns to find his jab and take over in the second half, and he now has the blueprint to do it again rather than having to work it out in real time. Wardley’s power is obviously still there, which is why he’s not an outright write-off, but Dubois goes in with the tactical edge and the composure he showed under real pressure last time.
Tip 1: Dubois to win: standard price 1/3, or boosted to 50/1 with Sky Bet
- Many promotional offers
- Plenty of payment methods available
No need for the judges
Dubois took time to find his range last time, needing to recover from two knockdowns before the fight turned in the ninth round and the stoppage came in the eleventh. Wardley’s power means an early finish from either man can’t be ruled out, but the pattern of their first meeting, two fighters feeling each other out before it boils over late, points to the finish arriving in the same window again rather than sooner.
Tip 2: Fight to end in round 10-12 @ 8/1
- Power Prices, Wonder Wheel & Acca Insurance among a range of top offers
- Innovative Super Sub offer means bets roll over to the player coming on
