Teranga Lions can spoil Morocco’s party
Hosts Morocco are on the verge of claiming AFCON glory and satisfying a nation but Senegal look a dangerous opponent in what promises to be a tense final.
The semi-finals produced just one goal between them and this final could follow a similar pattern. Morocco got the better of Nigeria courtesy of a penalty shootout win in their semi-final, while Sadio Mane’s curling strike got Senegal past Egypt.
In truth, neither of these nations has been entirely convincing in the tournament and, in all probability, it is home advantage that has determined Morocco as favourites for this showdown in Rabat as they look to hoist the trophy for a second time, their first in five decades.
Senegal, meanwhile, landed their first and only AFCON triumph in 2021, two years on from losing out in the final.
Pape Thiaw’s side are making up for their last-16 exit in 2023. They have a deep squad, with Nicolas Jackson and Iliman Ndiaye joined in attack by thriving veteran Mane, while the likes of Pape Matar Sarr, Idrissa Gueye and Lamine Camara are supporting from deeper.
They controlled their semi-final against Egypt for long spells and were always the more likely side to win. At odds-against, they are a fair bet to raise the silverware and quell the Moroccan party.

AFCON decider may go the distance
Penalties is a very realistic outcome in the Rabat and odds of 10/3 on either side prevailing after a shootout look generous.
Four of the last nine Africa Cup of Nations finals have finished with a 1-0 scoreline and the form from the semi-finals suggests goals will be at a premium again.
There is intense pressure on Morocco to deliver victory and their semi-final against Nigeria displayed a real lack of creativity under that scrutiny.
Senegal, meanwhile, were controlled and measured against Egypt, with 63 per-cent possession and an xG against of just 0.13 after conceding just one shot on target.
The longer this contest goes on goalless, the more the fear of a tournament-costing mistake will restrict the players’ willingness to take risks. Penalties could start to look a logical ending, with four of the last 10 AFCON finals ending in this fashion.

Mane could be the man again
Sadio Mane was the difference-maker for Senegal in the last four. The ex-Liverpool and Bayern Munich winger curled home the only goal as the Lions of Teranga made it 11 wins and a draw from their last 12 AFCON games.
Mane’s strike on 78 minutes was his fifth goal contribution in this edition and his 11th AFCON goal overall as he delivered a Man of the Match performance. The 33-year-old is a major danger to Morocco.
As noted, four of the last five AFCON finals have yielded just one goal, while none of the previous 12 iterations have gone over three goals. The match goals range at 1-3 looks a reliable inclusion in this bet builder.
A lower corner count also seems very likely. The Moroccans have conceded a miserly six corners so far in the tournament across their six games, restricting four opponents to zero corners.
Senegal have averaged six flag-kicks per game en route to the final but they may well fall under that figure now and a combined match tally of less than eight corners is forecast in what looks sure to be an edgy encounter.
