After a week off following a trip to Japan, the PGA Tour returns to US soil for the Bank of Utah Championship at Black Desert Golf Course. This tournament first appeared on the schedule as the Black Desert Championship last year, with a red-hot Matt McCarty claiming the title on only his second start after graduating from the Korn Ferry Tour. Bank of Utah Championship golf betting tips
Despite a lack of star quality in the field, the 7,412-yard, par-71 course proved easy pickings for the PGA Tour’s lesser lights. McCarty reached 23-under par, boosted by a brilliant eagle two at the 14th hole in his final round.
As with many desert tracks, the course is wide-open off the tee. The key to success will be peppering the pins on approach and converting enough putts to take the title.

Thorbjornsen poised for PGA Tour breakthrough
In the absence of the game’s elite, Maverick McNealy, Alex Noren and Michael Thorbjornsen are among those jostling for Bank of Utah favouritism. Of that trio, it’s Thorbjornsen who really catches the eye.
The 24-year-old still awaits his PGA Tour breakthrough, but he has become a consistent contender in lower-level events this year, finishing as runner-up at the Corales Puntacana Championship, fourth in the Rocket Classic and third in the recent Baycurrent Classic.
Blessed with enormous driving power which sees him ranking ninth in strokes-gained off-the-tee on the PGA Tour this season, Thorbjornsen should be able to attack this layout. He opened with a first-round 67 last season before a knee injury forced him to withdraw in the second round.
At 72nd on the FedEx Cup Fall standings, Thorbjornsen has work to do to earn an invitation to next year’s PGA Tour Signature Events. Victory in Utah would help him realise that ambition.

Defending champion good enough to double up
Following a stellar 2024 Korn Ferry Tour season and a win at Black Desert last year, McCarty has had an up-and-down 2025 campaign. However, there have been a few notable highlights, including finishing 14th on his Masters debut in April.
McCarty’s latest highlight came in his most recent PGA Tour round: a final-round 60 for a share of 14th place in the Baycurrent Classic. This outstanding performance should have him perfectly tuned for his title defence.
An Arizona native who is highly comfortable competing on desert layouts, McCarty will have to cope with the added pressure of being the defending champion this week. However, he is capable of proving up to the task.

Crack putter Montgomery looks worth a punt
After a dream start to his PGA Tour career, featuring eight top-15 finishes in his first nine starts, Taylor Montgomery’s form steadily tailed off. He eventually found himself back competing on the Korn Ferry Tour earlier this year.
However, he found confidence again on the PGA Tour’s feeder circuit, posting a runner-up finish at the Utah Championship. He took that renewed belief back to the PGA Tour, finishing sixth in the Sanderson Farms Championship at the beginning of this month.
One of the best putters on the circuit – only Sam Burns ranks higher for strokes-gained putting – Montgomery is based just a couple of hours away from Black Desert in Las Vegas, and he looks poised to contend at the venue.
