Madrid out for some revenge
Real Madrid will have an immediate chance to pay some retribution to Benfica for the 4-2 defeat here last month that cost Los Blancos direct passage to the last-16 and, dramatically, kept the Eagles in the competition courtesy of goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin’s 98th-minute goal.
That pulsating end condemned Madrid to ninth spot in the Champions League standings and allowed Benfica to squeeze through in 24th at the expense of Marseille, thus setting up this two-legged rematch.
Benfica have won three of the previous four meetings in this competition, though last month’s game was a first clash since the 1964/65 season.
Real Madrid have won three out of three in La Liga since that reverse here, scoring eight goals. Benfica, meanwhile, have two wins and a draw domestically, scoring four times.
The mayhem of that previous clash may not be repeated now, with Madrid likely to deliver a more controlled display.
The Spanish giants have, though, kept just three clean sheets in 10 games so far in 2026, and none in the last five in the Champions League, so expect Benfica to cause problems in what may ultimately be a home defeat for Jose Mourinho against his former club.

Mbappe to provide the spark
Kylian Mbappe has scored 13 goals in seven appearances the Champions League this season, including a brace here in the that January defeat.
The French ace sat out the weekend win over Real Sociedad but manager Alvaro Arbeloa has confirmed his star forward is fit and ready for selection now.
Mbappe has scored 13 times in his last nine start for Los Blancos, opening the scoring in six of those games. He’s an incredibly potent weapon, will be deployed on penalties, and looks the likeliest player to break the deadlock in the Portuguese capital once more.

Tempers may rise in Lisbon
Their meeting here last month produced lots of goals and lots of cards. Two cautions were handed out inside the first 15 minutes, while four more were added inside the 90 minutes before Raul Asencio and Rodrygo were given their marching orders in stoppage time.
Familiarity may well breed contempt now as the sides meet again. Mourinho is sure to have his squad wound like a coiled spring to meet the white shirts of Madrid in battle and the referee could be busy again.
Norwegian forward Andreas Schjelderup scored twice for Benfica in that contest, having taken five shots at goal, and he’s decent value for at least one shot on target here as part of this bet builder having scored against Alverca earlier this month.
Mbappe’s sidekick at Madrid is Vinicius Jr. They have created 19 scoring chances in Champions League games already this season. The Frenchman has laid on 10 opportunities for his Brazilian teammate, with Vinicius Jr providing nine for Mbappe.
Vinicius Jr hit a brace against Sociedad at the weekend, making it four goals and three assists in his last five outings. He can add to that tally here.
