Premier League preview
The Premier League returns this weekend after some great European action. With Man City and Aston Villa now only four points behind Arsenal in the title race and with only four points separating fifth and 11th, there is so much to play for.
West Ham’s recent resurgence has also made the relegation battle more exciting, and the pack above the Hammers could easily be drawn in if they are not careful.
Picking your Premier League League acca might seem tough at first glance, so let’s help you out by previewing a few of the big matches.
Liverpool vs Newcastle (Saturday 8pm)
Anfield prepares for a heavyweight clash as Liverpool turn their poor Premier League form around, which most recently included a 3-2 loss against Bournemouth. The Reds currently sit in 6th place and are eager to prove their a point as they battle to get back into the top five.
Newcastle United travel to Anfield sitting just one win away from leapfrogging the Reds in the table. Eddie Howe’s side showed their defensive grit in a 1-1 midweek draw against Paris Saint-Germain, but they have been poor on the road this season. Newcastle have only won two of their 11 away matches in the league.
While Newcastle’s ability to frustrate elite opposition is well-documented, Liverpool’s offensive qualities and their home form suggest the Reds should be able to pick up a solid win.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City (Sunday 4:30pm)
Tottenham briefly looked like they were regaining their identity under Thomas Frank, but a dismal run of league form has seen them slide toward the bottom half of the table. While a midweek European victory over Eintracht Frankfurt provided some relief, concerns remain after Spurs failed to win any of their last five Premier League matches.
Tottenham have struggled significantly at home. They have won just two of their 11 home league games this season, losing six. Despite flashes of defensive solidity, Frank’s side has been toothless at home in attack, averaging just 1.18 goals per game in north London.
The response from Manchester City has been far more convincing. After a rare four-match winless streak, Pep Guardiola’s side bounced back with consecutive wins over Wolves and Galatasaray. While they suffered a setback against Manchester United recently, City remain firmly in the title hunt, sitting second and trailing leaders Arsenal by just a few points.
Across the season, City’s attack has been strong, averaging 2.04 goals per game. Signing Antoine Semenyo has provided an immediate spark, with the forward already scoring two goals in three appearances for the club. Additionally, the arrival of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace has bolstered a backline hampered by injuries to the likes of Ruben Dias and John Stones.
City have enjoyed their recent trips to this ground, winning three of their last four competitive visits, including a 1-0 victory in this fixture last season. With Tottenham struggling and City back to winning ways, the visitors look well-placed to secure another vital three points in the title race.
Sunderland vs Burnley (Monday 8pm)
Sunderland have a great record at the Stadium of Light, and this could be crucial in their match against Burnley on Monday night. They are unbeaten in 11 league matches at the Stadium of Light and many are tipping them to go the season undefeated at home. During that run, they managed to hold title contenders Arsenal, Manchester City, and Aston Villa to draws, while securing five wins from six matches against sides currently in the bottom half of the table.
Regis Le Bris’ side have conceded an average of just 1.13 goals per game. This is a record better than several “Big Six” clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United.
In contrast, Burnley have struggled significantly on their return to the Premier League. Scott Parker’s side currently possesses the worst expected goals (xG) metric in the division at just 1.95, highlighting a major weakness in creating high-quality chances. Defensively, the Clarets have been equally vulnerable, conceding an average of 1.91 goals per game.
Burnley’s away form remains a particular area of concern as well. They have lost eight of their 11 away games this season, conceding an average of 2.45 goals per trip. While they did secure a 2–0 victory over Sunderland earlier in the campaign at Turf Moor, facing Le Bris’ unbeaten home side in the Northeast presents a much harder challenge.
