It is Haydock’s biggest jumps fixture of the year on Saturday, which includes the Grade 1 Betfair Chase, which for the last 20 years has been the first major stop on the route to March’s Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The rest of the card is traditionally strong too, with loads of horses graduating from handicaps or novices here to the upper echelons of the sport. Our betting expert has three top tips for you ahead of Betfair Chase Day and we have also provided you with a host of sign up offers from UK betting sites so that you can get some free bets to use on the racing.

Betfair Chase Day Betting tips
Our betting expert has three selections in the three biggest races on Haydock’s stellar seven-race card.
- 14.25 Haydock – Ace Of Spades @ 15/2
- 15.00 Haydock – Grey Dawning @ 11/10
- 15.35 Haydock – Famous Bridge @ 13/2
14.25 Haydock – Ace Of Spades
This premier handicap is worth £100,000 and it is exactly the sort of race Dan Skelton needs to win, or at least take a chunk of place prize money, if he is to finally secure the trainers’ title.
He saddles two in this race and second string Joyeux Machin is not without a chance now he is fit, having run in a race that has worked out extremely well.
Even so, first string Ace Of Spades looks on his way to being a lot better than a mark of 130.
He was unlucky not to land a big handicap at Ayr’s Scottish Grand National meeting in the spring, coming off the bridle last of all but going down by a head in a race that turned into a sprint.
He won at Aintree last time, again travelling strongly but taking time to assert. That race was over 2m4f and it is fancied that staying trips will be more his bag in time.
Haydock should suit his style, as one who travels and digs in rather than takes off for pressure. He is a rock-solid each-way bet.

15.00 Haydock – Grey Dawning
This year’s Betfair Chase features the one-two from 12 months ago, plus three of last season’s better novices in the division.
The race ultimately centres on Skelton once again. His Grey Dawning tanked all over Royale Pagaille in the 2024 Betfair Chase, but when Harry Skelton asked him to win his race he sputtered a little, either through a lack of stamina or fitness on rain-softened ground.
Given he had no trouble with the distance at Aintree in April, it is fair to give him another chance to show it was the lack of a run that beat him last year. Again, with this race being so valuable (£112,500 to the winner) his trainer will have left nothing to chance now.
A fully-fit Grey Dawning sets a high bar for the youngsters to clear. Haiti Couleurs may want a little more emphasis on stamina, likewise Stellar Story.
It is fancied that Handstands might have the class to compete, and he has had excuses on his last two starts, but he is a leap into the unknown much more than the favourite is.

- Hugely attractive new customer welcome offer, offering £50 in bonuses
- Popular Double Delight promo offers great value on goalscorer bets
15.35 Haydock – Famous Bridge
You do not get more of a classic course specialist than Famous Bridge. In five chase starts at Haydock, he has passed the post first three times, finished third and unseated down the back straight when still travelling within himself.
While this is a competitive race, often the best horses to emerge from it turned out to have needed the run.
There is little doubt that Famous Bridge will be fit and raring to go. For one, trainer Nicky Richards has often used this race as a starting point for a major prospect, and he won it with Famous Bridge two years ago.
It seems Richards is taking few chances, either. Famous Bridge has already been out this autumn, putting in a classic first-run-of-the-season display at Ayr where he went with purpose but dropped right away as his fitness failed.
Now back under his favoured conditions, off the same sort of mark as when he last came home in front at this track, he looks an appealing bet.
