Premier League Preview – Man United vs Man City (Sunday 4.30pm)
The Manchester derby returns to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, with the two clubs in very different positions three games in. City sit top of the table with a perfect record under Enzo Maresca, nine points from nine, and Erling Haaland already among the goals with the winner against Coventry to follow his brace at Crystal Palace. Rayan Cherki has settled quickly too, contributing two goals and two assists in the opening weeks.
United, by contrast, have been difficult to read: beaten 2-0 at Hull on the opening day, emphatic in a 5-2 win over Ipswich, then pegged back by Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ stoppage-time equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Everton having led twice.
What United do have is recent history on their side. The last meeting, in January, ended 2-0 to the hosts at Old Trafford, and across the last five derbies United have two wins to City’s one. Bruno Fernandes remains the man to build around, already on three goals and an assist this season after a 2025-26 campaign in which he set a new single-season Premier League assists record with 21.
The concern is what happens at the other end against a City side scoring freely, although on this fixture’s recent evidence, that has counted for less than it should.
