Premier League preview

There’s midweek Premier League action taking place, with a lot to play for at both ends of the table. The results from the games last night have added some pressure for clubs playing this evening, with Liverpool now four points behind Chelsea in fifth. A draw for West Ham against Man United now makes Nottingham Forest’s match against Wolves even more important.

Have a look at our thoughts on a couple of the Premier League matches taking place this evening, and hopefully, this can help you create an accumulator for the matches once you’ve got your Betfred account up and running.

Fulham vs Man City (Wednesday 7.30pm)

The history between these two clubs is historically lopsided, defined by a staggering 19-match winning streak for Manchester City that dates back to 2011. During this dominant run, City has averaged over three goals per game, turning Fulham’s trips to the Etihad into a recurring nightmare where the Cottagers have been outscored 25–4 over their last eight league visits.

City are in a fierce title race with Arsenal, but they are still six points away from the Gunners, leaving them with zero margin for error as they head into a favourable stretch of home fixtures. While Fulham’s recent form has stuttered with consecutive losses, their outside shot at European qualification ensures they won’t arrive without a fight.

The reverse game saw a 5-4 thriller, which proved that Fulham can take advantage of City’s leaky defency. While City is expected to dominate the ball, the memory of that nine-goal shootout looms large. The central tension of this matchup lies in whether City can maintain their clinical control at home or if Fulham can repeat their previous success in breaking through the defense to play the role of title-race spoilers.

Aston Villa vs Brighton (Wednesday 7.30pm)

The history of this fixture has become a source of dread for the visitors, with Aston Villa establishing a clear dominance over Brighton that includes seven wins from their last nine Premier League encounters. This was most recently highlighted by Villa’s clinical 4-3 victory at the Amex in December. Villa Park is always hard to go to, and Unai Emery’s side have only lost three league games at home this season. Meanwhile, Brighton’s trips to the Midlands have often ended in disaster, most notably a 6–1 drubbing that stands as their heaviest defeat in this matchup.

Aston Villa enters this clash as heavy favourites and this should be no shock as they are third, whilst a Brighton have spiralled into 14th after a five-match winless run. The Seagulls inconsistency on the road is a significant factor here. They have managed just two wins in twelve away games this season, averaging a meagre 0.83 points per game away from home.

Villa’s underlying metrics remain elite even in their rare setbacks, suggesting that a -0.5 handicap is a conservative line. Given that six of their last seven meetings have produced over 2.5 goals and Brighton are off the back of a demoralising 1-0 loss to rivals Crystal Palace, it’s definitely worth backing Villa to cover a higher handicap against a defence that has conceded 33 goals this term.

Betting markets reveal favourites for Premier League top 5 finish

Wins on the weekend for Arsenal and Man City means they are the huge favourites to finish in the top five at UK betting sites. The battle for the other three spots is heating up, with the likes of Aston Villa, Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool all battling for the last three spots.

Brentford can also count themselves in the running, with the bookies suggesting they have a small chance of beating some Premier League giants for the top 5 spots. It’s been a very impressive first season for Keith Andrews at the Bees, especially when many were predicting Brentford to be relegated.
