Champions League preview
The Champions League continues to throw up surprises this season, with twists and turns every matchday. It’s the final set of matches for the League Phase on Wednesday night, with all 18 games taking place at 8PM. There’s a lot at stake for most of the teams involved. Some, like Napoli are battling to stay in the competition, whilst the likes of Spurs, Newcastle and Liverpool are hoping to finish in the top eight and automatically qualify for the last 16.
Check out our thoughts on a couple of the upcoming Champions League ties below. You can combine them in an acca once you’ve got your Betfred account up and running.
Napoli vs Chelsea (Wed 8pm)
Napoli have been strong at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona during this Champions League league phase, taking seven points from a possible nine on home soil. Their record against English teams in Naples is equally strong, with eight wins from 11 matches and only two defeats.
Chelsea’s recent form under Liam Rosenior has provided cause for optimism, but their away record in Italy remains a lingering concern. While they have secured three wins in their last four matches across all competitions, the Blues have often struggled to find their rhythm in high-pressure European atmospheres away from Stamford Bridge, and they realistically need a win here to secure a top-eight finish and bypass the playoff round.
The hosts also benefit from a slightly more settled squad despite a recent domestic setback against Juventus. Antonio Conte’s side has leaned heavily on the goal-scoring threat of Scott McTominay and Rasmus Højlund in Europe, and they will be desperate to leapfrog back into the top 24 to avoid total elimination. Chelsea, meanwhile, are sweating on the fitness of talisman Cole Palmer, whose potential absence from the starting XI would significantly blunt their creative edge.
Liverpool vs Qarabag (Wed 8pm)
Liverpool have maintained a strong presence at Anfield in the Champions League this season, securing wins against Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. While a surprising 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in November proved they aren’t invincible at home, Arne Slot’s side currently sits 4th in the league phase and they only need a point from this final fixture to guarantee an automatic spot in the Round of 16.
Qarabag’s European campaign has been defined by resilience. The Azerbaijani side sits 18th in the table, effectively needing a result at Anfield to ensure their place in the knockout play-offs. Their confidence will be high following a dramatic 3-2 injury-time win over Eintracht Frankfurt last week, but their record against top-tier opposition on the road remains their biggest hurdle.
The tactical battle will likely see Qarabag deploy a deep low block, a setup that has frustrated Liverpool in domestic play this season, most recently in a 3-2 loss to Bournemouth. However, the Reds have been clinical in Europe. Liverpool’s main concern lies in a depleted defence, with Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez both sidelined, potentially forcing Ryan Gravenberch to feature in the backline once again.
Liverpool among favourites to finish in Champions League top 8
With just three points separating third and 12th, the top eight could look completely different by the end of the evening. At the moment, betting sites currently have Liverpool as the favourites to qualify for the top 8. Arsenal and Bayern Munich have already achieved this feat, so there is only six spots in the top eight up for grabs.
