Premier League preview

Just four points separate first and third, and only five points separate fifth and 11th in the Premier League table this season. Multiple clubs are in with a chance of European qualification, whilst Arsenal, Man City and Aston Villa are all battling for the title.

Picking your weekend Premier League acca might seem tricky at first, so let’s help you out by previewing a few of the ties we have to look forward to.

Aston Villa vs Brentford (Sunday 2pm)

Aston Villa briefly looked like they were losing momentum after a draw with Crystal Palace followed by a disappointing home defeat to Everton. Those concerns were eased as Unai Emery’s side bounced back by picking up an important win against a Newcastle team in strong form.

Prior to the 1–0 loss against Everton, Villa had been flawless at Villa Park, winning 11 consecutive home matches. Despite dominating the underlying numbers in that game, the Villans were unable to turn their big chances into goals, while Everton found the net from just 0.50 expected goals.

The response against Newcastle told a very different story. Villa were far more clinical, and although they were comfortably second-best in terms of xG, they still came away with a clean-sheet victory over the Magpies.

Across the season, Villa have exceeded expectations and are fully in the battle for the Premier League title.

Brentford have struggled of late, including a poor showing against Nottingham Forest, and their away record remains a concern. Keith Andrews’ men have collected just nine points from 11 road games this season (0.82 points per game), with only four sides faring worse.

Man United vs Fulham (Sunday 2pm)

Michael Carrick has enjoyed an outstanding opening spell as Manchester United’s interim boss. Last weekend’s dramatic 3–2 win at the Emirates, sealed by a beautifully curled effort from Matheus Cunha, marked the first time Arsenal have been beaten at home in the league this season.

That victory followed an equally eye-catching 2–0 win over rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford. United created six big chances to City’s none, which suggests the visitors were fortunate the scoreline wasn’t heavier.

Sunday’s clash with Fulham represents United’s first return to Old Trafford since that commanding derby performance. If Carrick can make it three wins in a row, then the Red Devils have a huge chance of qualifying for a European spot.

While Marco Silva’s team arrive in good form, with just one defeat in their last eight matches, a trip to Old Trafford could prove a step too far, especially with momentum beginning to swing back in United’s favour.

Betting sites reveal Premier League sides most likely to finish in top 5

Arsenal’s strong season, which sees them first in the Premier League, has them as the clear favourites to finish in the top five, according to football betting sites like BetMGM, which are predicting that Man City and Aston Villa are the most likely teams to join the Gunners.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Man United are all in the race, with the bookies finding it tough to separate the three, whilst they also give Newcastle an outside chance of finishing in the Champions League spots.
