BetMGM World Matchplay preview (Tonight 7pm)
Round One concluded last night, with World No.2 Luke Humphries suffering a shock defeat against Cameron Menzies. Attention now turns to round two, where there are some cracking matches to be played in Blackpool.
The night opens with a heavyweight battle between former Premier League winner Jonny Clayton and two-time World Champion Gary Anderson. Both looked sharp in the first round, so this match is really tough to call, but it’s the perfect way to begin tonight’s action.
We are then treated to an all-Dutch clash as Michael van Gerwen takes on Dirk van Duijvenbode. Michael van Gerwen is chasing his fourth title in Blackpool, but he faces a tough test against van Duijvenbode’s aggressive style. His heavy 180-hitting could easily disrupt van Gerwen’s rhythm if he’s not careful.
Favourite Luke Littler also features, and he will be full of confidence after seeing Humphries knocked out of the competition. Littler is the reigning champion after beating James Wade in last year’s final, but he faces a tough challenge against Nathan Aspinall. ‘The Asp’ lifted the trophy in 2023, so he has all the quality and experience to shock the Winter Gardens crowd this evening with a victory over Littler.
The final fixture of the night sees Josh Rock take on Stephen Bunting. The match is shaping up to be one of the tightest matchups so far. Only one place separates them in the World Rankings. Both men have incredibly high ceilings, but they will need to find real consistency tonight to prove they can make a deep run in Blackpool.
