Birmingham vs Ipswich betting tips
Our betting expert has three Birmingham vs Ipswich tips for Friday night’s Championship opener at St Andrew’s. Scroll down for the analysis behind his selections.
- Over 2.5 goals @ 11/10 with Sky Bet
- Jay Stansfield to score anytime @ 7/4 with Betano
- Christopher Klarer to be booked, Jay Stansfield over 2.5 shots & Jaden Philogene 1+ shot on target @ 7/1 with bet365
Goals on the cards for Championship curtain raiser
Birmingham scored 47 goals in 23 home games on their path to the League One title last season. While they could struggle to replicate that output in the Championship, they should at least be able to get off to a scoring start against Ipswich.
Kieran McKenna’s Tractor Boys were the league’s top scorers when they were promoted in 2023/24. The Tractor Boys have netted 12 times in four pre-season outings, but also conceded in three of those.
Birmingham and Ipswich are among the ante-post promotion favourites, meaning both will be keen to get up and running on Friday. We can expect both sides to show an attacking flourish and play their part in a high-scoring game.
- Birmingham vs Ipswich tip 1: Over 2.5 goals @ 11/10 with Sky Bet

Stansfield to strike at St Andrew’s
Jay Stansfield was preferred over summer signing Kyogo Furuhashi for Birmingham’s final pre-season friendly, and he looks set to start against Ipswich. Manager Chris Davies recently admitted that Furuhashi needs time to get to grips with the new environment and style of play.
The Japan international had a disheartening spell at Rennes, struggling to break into the squad following his January move from Celtic. Furuhashi’s quality is undeniable, but Stansfield looks the safer bet up front for the Blues for now.
The 22-year-old scored 19 goals to help Birmingham to promotion last season. He was also one of the few bright spots for The Blues when they were relegated in 2023/24, netting 12 goals in the second tier.
He scored in three of his final six starts last season and returned to action in style against Nottingham Forest, scoring the only goal of the pre-season fixture. He can start the season with a bang on Friday night.
- Birmingham vs Ipswich tip 2: Jay Stansfield to score anytime @ 7/4 with Betano

Klarer to come under pressure
Stansfield’s goal is unlikely to be his only crack, though. The Birmingham striker registered 106 shots for the side last season and had at least two shots in each of his last six starts.
Birmingham centre-back Christoph Klarer led Birmingham with 51 fouls en route to League One promotion, and the 24-year-old could begin life in the Championship with a booking on Friday.
The Austrian was carded 12 times in all competitions last term, with six of these coming in his last 19 appearances. The superior nature of the opposition he’ll face this season only increases his chances of getting into trouble.
The Blues are unlikely to enjoy the same level of dominance they had in most games last season. Ipswich’s attacking lineup of Jaden Philogene, Sammie Szmodics, Jack Clarke, and George Hirst will put Klarer and the rest of the Birmingham back line under a lot more pressure than they are used to.
Philogene is of particular interest in the shots-on-target market, and he looks a good price to test the keeper at least once.
The 23-year-old had eight shots on target in his six starts last season after moving from Aston Villa in January. His spell with Hull in 2023/24 saw him register 39 shots on target in 33 appearances, suggesting he’s got the attacking ability to perform in the Championship.
- Birmingham vs Ipswich tip 3: Christopher Klarer to be booked, Jay Stansfield over 2.5 shots & Jaden Philogene 1+ shot on target @ 7/1 with bet365
