Charles Schwab Challenge Betting Tips

Updated on

Following his dominant five-shot triumph at the US PGA Championship, punters must again weigh up whether to support Scottie Scheffler at short odds in the Charles Schwab Challenge on the PGA Tour this week.

Scheffler, who claimed his third Major at Quail Hollow on Sunday, is just 23/10 to win for the first time at Colonial Country Club, the ancient 7,289-yard, par-70 Texas track where he has finished second, third and second over the last three seasons.

While most players would take a week off after a Major win, the unassuming 28-year-old has form for following up career-defining successes with PGA Tour silverware, having claimed the Heritage a week after winning the Masters last year.

In-form English looks a clear Colonial contender

Make no mistake, Scheffler is going to be hugely difficult to beat if he arrives in anything like the form he showed at Quail Hollow, but tree-lined Colonial presents a different test and he’s a short price in a competitive field full of in-form rivals.

Others catch the eye at more generous each-way prices, beginning with Harris English, who followed his fellow American home in North Carolina last week, finishing in a three-way tie for second at the US PGA.

English has an excellent course record, finishing fifth at Colonial in 2012, runner-up in 2016 and 12th as recently as 2023, and he’s been churning out solid results this season including a win at the Farmers Insurance Open.

An excellent putter who is typically tidy from tee-to-green, English is well suited to Colonial and there is every chance he builds on last week’s excellent performance with his irons.

Accurate Poston poised for another fine week

JT Poston has had a love-hate relationship with this venue, finishing 10th in a stacked field in 2020 in the first post-Covid PGA Tour event, and 12th last year, with three missed cuts in between those two solid efforts.

However, the accurate North Carolinian returns in high spirits after he finished fifth in his home state last week – his best Major finish by some distance at a course which doesn’t play to his strengths.

Colonial, a test of precision from the tee box, is a much more suitable assignment for Poston, who has every chance of claiming a fourth PGA Tour title and a first since last year’s Shriners Children’s Open.

Gerard has all the tools to shine in Texas

Like English and Poston, Ryan Gerard also shone at Quail Hollow, finishing eighth on only his third start in a Major championship setting, and the steadily improving 25-year-old could capture a first PGA Tour title this Sunday.

Gerard, a Korn Ferry Tour graduate at the start of this season, has enjoyed his trips to Texas this year, finishing ninth at the Houston Open and runner-up behind Brian Harman at the Texas Open.

He makes his Colonial Country Club debut this week, but there’s no reason to suspect this well-rounded performer will not take to this layout.
