Coventry vs Middlesbrough betting tips & predictions

Our betting expert has three Coventry vs Middlesbrough tips for Monday, February 16 in the Championship at The Coventry Building Society Arena (kick-off, 8.00pm). Scroll down for the analysis behind his selections.

Top two could be hard to split

The top two in the Championship square off on Monday night, but in a twist to the plot, it is Middlesbrough that have taken over at the summit from early pacesetters Coventry.

Frank Lampard’s side burned an early trail and led by double digits in late November but a run of four wins in 13 games has dragged them back to the chasers.

They are without a win in three following a disappointing scoreless draw with 10-man Oxford last weekend.

Middlesbrough have accepted the mantle of hunters in chief, the Teessiders coming into this game on the back of six straight league wins. It is 39 years since they strung together seven in a row and they may not bridge the gap on Monday.

Lampard’s side have done much of their stuttering on the road and, at the Coventry Building Society Arena, it’s 11 wins and three draws from 15 Championship games.

No side in the second tier has gathered more points on the road than Boro but, for all that, they have won just eight of their 16 games.

Coventry’s recent struggles have permitted Kim Hellberg and his side to ascend to the top of the pile and consolidating that spot would be more than satisfactory here.

Boro have lost six of their last seven away league games at Coventry and a stalemate suits the new league leaders and also allows Lampard’s side to avoid a further setback. Such notions are bound to enter the minds in both squads and a tense draw is forecast.

Coventry vs Middlesbrough tip 1: Draw @ 5/2

Repeat goal-fest looks unlikely

There were six goals when Coventry won 4-2 at the Riverside in November but a repeat is less likely now.

The season is much more mature and the race for automatic promotion is far more serious, with Millwall and Ipswich breathing down the necks of the top two. Goal-fests are less likely.

Coventry averaged 2.8 goals per game as they hit a half-century of goals in their first 18 league games of the season but, since then, that has dropped to 13 goals scored in 13 games.

Since Hellberg assumed the reins at Boro in November, his side have improved in all areas. They had conceded 18 times in 17 games by then, but have leaked just 12 times in 14 games since. Only Ipswich and Stoke have conceded fewer goals.

Middlesbrough have failed to score in their five trips to the CBS Arena, with four of those games producing under 2.5 goals.

Coventry vs Middlesbrough tip 2: Under 2.5 goals @ 11/10

Corner count should be strong

Only Sheffield United (7.19) are averaging more corners taken than Middlesbrough (6.19) this season so far and that was borne out last Monday as they shared 16 flag-kicks at Bramall Lane.

Coventry (5.52) are in decent corner-taking shape and their league games average 10.29 corners compared to 10.58 for the visiting side. This duo getting into doubles figures is a solid bet builder option.

With the hosts’ much-reduced goals return in recent months and Boro’s defensive resolve, the match goals range falling in the 1-4 category also makes good appeal. Just one of the last 30 head-to-heads has ended goalless.

Alan Browne was January’s Championship Player of the Month, the Irishman scoring three times and landing one assist. He is a decent goal threat and is taken to get at least one shot on target.

That should also be in the wheelhouse of Coventry’s Haji Wright, who has scored 10 goals in 27 league outings and has fired 71 shots with a 35 percent accuracy rate.

Coventry vs Middlesbrough tip 3: Bet Builder: Match Goals Range: 1-4, Over 9 Corners, Alan Browne 1+ Shots on target & Haji Wright 1+ Shots on target @ 17/2
