In-form Ireland capable of upsetting hosts

The Republic of Ireland’s prospects of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup were looking bleak after they picked up only one point from their first three matches in Group F.

However, Evan Ferguson’s 70th-minute winner against Armenia on matchday four sparked a spectacular resurgence from Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side.

Ireland shocked group winners Portugal 2-0 in their following game, thanks to a Troy Parrott brace, and Parrott’s hat-trick sealed a thrilling 3-2 victory in Hungary on matchday six.

They are rated outsiders for their Path D semi-final against Czechia in Prague and the winners of the tie will have home advantage in Tuesday’s final.

But Ireland’s flying finish to their qualifying campaign has boosted their self-belief and they are worth backing to qualify from the semi-final.

Czechia are an experienced but limited side whose recent results have been uninspiring. They thrashed Gibraltar 6-0 in their final qualifying fixture but drew 0-0 with Croatia and lost 2-1 to the Faroe Islands in their previous two Group L games.

Their last two friendly internationals produced a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia and a 1-0 win over San Marino while they lost 5-1 away to Croatia earlier in the qualifying campaign.

Molumby may find trouble in midfield scrap

The Republic of Ireland must work hard to unsettle their hosts on Thursday and midfielder Jayson Molumby is well worth backing to be shown a card.

The stakes are high in Prague and Molumby has been booked in two of his three qualifying starts, away to Portugal and at home to Armenia.

He has a decent disciplinary record for West Brom in this season’s Championship, although he was sent off in November’s 3-2 defeat at leaders Coventry.

Last term, Molumby picked up ten yellow cards and one red in 30 league starts for the Baggies and he may struggle to stay out of trouble on Thursday.

Expect a cagey start to Prague play-off clash

A tense atmosphere is expected at the Fortuna Arena as Czechia and the Republic of Ireland compete for a place in the Path D play-off final against Denmark or North Macedonia.

Six of Ireland’s nine goals in Group F were scored in the second half of matches so the half-time draw looks a solid Bet Builder selection.

AZ Alkmaar striker Parrott clearly poses the main goal threat for the Irish after scoring five times in the stunning wins over Portugal and Hungary.
