Darts World Grand Prix Betting Tips

Our betting expert has three tips for the Darts World Grand Prix which starts on Monday at the Mattioli Arena, Leicester. Scroll down for the analysis behind his selections.

Mighty Mike may dominate again

As with most major darts events these days, the two Lukes, Littler and Humphries, dominate the betting markets for the World Grand Prix.

However, the unique double-in, double-out format often proves a stumbling block for even the world’s best, meaning experience and composure are vital. That’s where six-time champion Michael van Gerwen stands out as the value pick.

The Dutchman last lifted the trophy in 2022, and while his form since then has been inconsistent, recent performances suggest he is rediscovering his top level. Van Gerwen claimed his first televised title in two years by beating Littler in the World Series of Darts final last month, a result that appears to have lifted a weight off his shoulders.

With that long-awaited win under his belt and his off-oche distractions seemingly behind him, Mighty Mike looks primed to re-establish himself as the dominant force in world darts.

The Heat is in red-hot form

Van Gerwen is a big price in his own right, but those seeking an each-way play at mammoth odds should look past familiar names like Gary Anderson and 2024 winner Mike De Decker and side with in-form Damon Heta.

The Australian was a close runner-up at the European Darts Open, narrowly losing 8-6 to Nathan Aspinall, but has winning form having landed two Players Championship events this year.

He is playing some great darts, too. The 102.0 average he put up in last week’s Players Championship 30 final would normally be enough to land another title, but Wessel Nijman played out of his skin, with a 103.44 average helping him to an 8-3 victory.

And that has been the story of Heta’s season. Players are having to put in sensational performances to see off the Heat and the level he is performing at should see him make a deep run in Leicester.

Only Gian van Veen (55.03%) has a better functional doubles percentage than Heta’s 52.93 per cent, so this format, in his current vein of form, should be right up his street.

Two-time winner Wade should reach semis

Another player who loves the double-start format is James Wade, who won the Grand Prix in 2007 and 2010 to become the only man not named Phil Taylor to lift the trophy between 2005 and 2011.

Those successes were a long time ago, of course, but Wade has arguably enjoyed his best year since. His resurgence has seen him reach the finals of the World Matchplay and UK Open, losing to Littler both times.

Wade avoids his nemesis Littler in his quarters, however, and it is a surprise to see he is not the favourite to reach the semis from his group.

Stephen Bunting holds that status, but his functional doubles percentage of 46.24 over the past 12 months pales in comparison to Wade’s 51.05 – the sixth-best of any player in that timeframe.

Only Littler can match Wade when it comes to hitting double 10 or 20, making him a real threat at the Grand Prix and 5/1 for him to outdo Bunting and Anderson in the 2nd quarter looks too big to ignore.
