Dubai Future Champions Festival betting tips
Our expert has a trio of selections on the card, including one in the Zetland Gold Cup, one in Dewhurst and one in the 21-runner Cesarewitch.
- 1.50 Newmarket – Look To The Stars @ 3/1
- 3.00 Newmarket – Distant Storm@ 2/1
- 3.40 Newmarket – Reverend Hubert@ 13/2
1.50 Newmarket – Look To The Stars
Charlie Appleby has dominated the Zetland Gold Cup in recent years, winning three of the last four renewals (he didn’t have a runner in last season’s race) and that trend looks set to continue courtesy of Look To The Stars.
The son of Galiway was beaten on his first two starts, finishing second over 7f at Haydock and again at Sandown, the latter when thrashed by Oxagon (runs in today’s Group 1 Dewhurst).
However, he’s made giant strides since then, presumably as a result of being gelded, accounting for a well-backed third on the AW at Kempton (first two well clear).
He improved again to land the Haynes, Hanson & Clark Conditions Stakes over a mile at Newbury last month, a race with an illustrious roll of honour that includes Shergar, Rainbow Quest, Nayef and Appleby’s Yibir, who went onto win the Breeders’ Cup Turf the following season.
He won in the style of a relentless galloper at Newbury and looks sure to appreciate these extra two furlongs.

3.00 Newmarket – Distant Storm
Charlie Appleby, William Buick and Godolphin are likely to be in the winner’s enclosure again in the feature Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, as Distant Storm is hard to oppose judging by last month’s wide-margin course-and-distance victory.
A son of Night Of Thunder, who cost a whopping €1.9m at the Arqana Breeze-up Sales in the spring, he’s got some way to go if he’s to recoup that outlay, but he’s made an excellent start to his career and victory in this mile event should rubber stamp at stud career down the line.
A narrow winner on his debut over 7f on the July Course (the reopposing Oxagon well behind in fifth), he was strong in the market for the Group 3 Acomb at York subsequently, but pulled much too hard and faded into third behind Gewan and Italy – both of whom are in opposition again today.
However, we saw the real Distant Storm here last month in the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes, the colt settling well in the rear before showing a potent turn of foot to sweep well clear in the final half-furlong.
He’s got something to find with Zavateri and Gstaad on the figures, but course form around here counts for a lot and I’m hopeful for a big performance.

3.40 Newmarket – Reverend Hubert
The Charles Byrnes-trained Reverend Hubert is one of the best dual purpose horses around at present and he’s surely going to be a player off just 8st 3lb in 2m2f Cesarewitch.
Rated 137 over hurdles and 144 over fences, the seven-year-has been lightly raced on the Flat in recent seasons, but he was really impressive when winning the Cesarewitch Trial over course-and-distance last month, pulling eight lengths clear of Chutzpot with the reopposing Belgravian another half-length back in third.
He’s picked up a 4lb penalty for that, but is due to go up another 6lb in future and, with Silvestre De Sousa aboard, can continue the dominance of Irish-trained runners in this race – they’ve won six of the last seven runnings, including Run For Oscar for this stable in 2022.
